My 15 favourite albums of 2009

15. Lynyrd Skynyrd-God & Guns

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_hOOU3MhgYyU/SqHM_Ccf_LI/AAAAAAAAAFM/KNghRSqpuXA/s320/God+&+Guns.jpg

Number 15 on this list are the legendary southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd with their new album "God & Guns". The southern influence is still there most clearly on the tracks like "Southern Ways" and "Simple Life", yet they have brought more hardrock to the table with Whitesnake-esque "Still Unbroken" and guitar virtuoso John 5's rocker "Floyd". Both very good tracks. Also the ballads on this one are really really good, propably my favourites. "Unwrite That Song" and "Gifted Hands" both rule. Lots of good albums were left out of this list, so can't say a bad thing about this years music releases.

Favourite of the album:

Unwrite That Song

Other ass kickers; Still Unbroken , Floyd , Gifted Hands

14. Eminem-Relapse

http://www.suprememag.com/2009/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/eminemcover.jpg

The summer album of '09. Used to blast this one to the brink of boredom but when listening back, it's a kickass album. Not much of a rap fan, but this one hit the home at first listen. Album is tight from start to finish but favourite part must be the end with a golden straight of great tracks such as "Deja Vu", "Beautiful", "Crack A Bottle" and "Underground". The new tracks on "Relapse:Refill" promises that incoming Relapse2 will also be most propably a nice continution to this great rappers carreer. Can't wait for it.

Favourite song of the album:

Beautiful

Other ass kickers; Deja Vu , Insane , Underground

13. Enter Shikari-Common Dreads

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kIv9iKLhLEs/Sh4gvorHocI/AAAAAAAAA5I/imtosV-dQdA/s320/Common+Dreads.jpg

This one's a suprise on the list. Started listening more to this band after seeing them live with The Prodigy and frankly this guys are extremely refreshing. Theyr mix of both rock and dance hardcore is unique and "Common Dreads" is actually a really good album. Harder songs like "Solidarity", "Juggernauts", "Zzzonked" are nicely mixed with more poppier stuff like "No Sleep Tonight" and "Gap In The Fence". This balances the album nicely and what makes this one great is also that this one is different than Shikaris debut "Take It To The Skies". Showing new sides is always refreshing. Looking forward of hearing more stuff from these guys. Also theyr certainly nice fellas when met them. Hard Jagermeister drinkers, or so is said.

Favourite song on the album:

The Jester

Other ass kickers; Zzzonked , No Sleep Tonight , Gap In The Fence

12. Creed-Full Circle

http://h.imagehost.org/0277/Creed_Full_Circle.jpg

A bit of a suprise too. Didn't think I would enjoy the new Creed album as much as I did, they delivered a nice one. Very Creedish mix of hardrockers and ballads, and ones again for Creed the ballads are bit better. Especially songs like "Rain", "Away In Silence", "Time" and "Good Fight" kickass. While the ballads might be better the rockers ain't too shabby either. "Bread Of Shame" and "Fear" rival with the albums bests. All around a good album and place number #12 on this list is deserved.

Favourite song of the album:

Rain

Other ass kickers; Bread Of Shame , Away In Silence , Time

11. W.A.S.P.-Babylon

http://www.radiotangra.com/media//img/wasp_babylon.jpg

Wow, this one's feel like a time travel to the 80's. W.A.S.P isn't exactly reinventing the wheel on this album. The opener "Crazy" sounds kind of like "Wild Child part 2", while the slower number "Into The Fire" is a clear rehass of "Sleeping In The Fire". but this doesn't matter. They rely on the known good methods of WASP's kind of rock and the final product is a fun metal album, their best since the 1992's "The Crimsom Idol". Other than "Crazy" and "Into The Fire" the songs "Live To Die Another Die", "Babylon's Burning" and "Godless Run" are the highlights. This album is most of all a good way of showing that these old bastards can still hold up with a competition against younger rockers. And I must say the lead guitar playing on this album is pretty damn neat and Blackie sounds F.I.N.E.

Favourite song of the album:

Babylon's Burning

Other ass kickers; Into The Fire , Crazy , Live To Die Another Day

10. Pearl Jam-Backspacer

http://gearpatrol.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/pearl-jam-backspacer-album-cover.jpg

The grunge is gone and replaced with a dose of staightup rock attitude. Not the kind of album I was waiting for, but this one's a grower that bring it just to the top 10. The rock start of "Gonna See My Friend", "Got Some" and "The Fixer" get's you in the PJ mood, when the slower numbers gather some balance and raises the quality of the album. Without songs like "Just Breathe", "Speed Of Sound" and "The End" this one would fall short, but luckily theese songs lift this one easily to the "favourite albums of the year list". Good album, but loses to another 90's grunge giant Alice In Chains when comparing theyr 2009 efforts.

Favourite song of the album:

Just Breathe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuq7RYQ8Wa0

Other ass kickers; The Fixer , Speed Of Sound , The End

9. Atreyu-Congregation of the damned

http://hotddl.com/uploads/1256294660_1256295231_985426916bc13c655c5d5305f11f2249_450.jpg

Atreyu promised that the new album would sound a mix between the older metalcore material and newer hardrock sound and they doesn't fail at delivering the mix. Shame it's not as great as I imagined it would be, but all in all it's a good album. At first listen felt a little underwhelming but the album's a grower and placed itself eventually in my top 10 favs. Album is full of good songs with the most memorable being the opener "Stop! Before It's Too Late And We've Destoroyed It All", great rockers "Bleeding Is A Luxury", "Black Days Begin", "Storm To Pass", "Gallows" and epics "Coffin Nails", "So Wrong", "You Were The King, Now You're Unconscious " The latter has the best intro i've heard in a long time.

Favourite song of the album:

Coffin Nails

Other ass kickers; Bleeding Is A Luxury , You Were The King, Now You're Unconscious , Storm To Pass

8. The Wildhearts-Chutzpah!

http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww185/worldisbar/89939970.jpg

The Wildhearts is know of theyr verstaile approach to rock music as they bring out material that can sound either metallica or the beatles or anything between. Chutzpah! carries out that legacy and with a great success. Both the rockers and popsongs are there side by side and they make this album interesting and verstaile. Usually i'd rank album like this near the medal places, but the problem with Chutzpah! is that the rockers are so awesome that the more poppier songs seem bland. The album doesn't flow as good when there's great songs like "The Jackson Whites", "Plastic Jebus", "John Of Violence", "Tim Smith", "Chutzpah!" and "only" good track such as "You Are The Proof That Not All Women Are Insane" or "Mazel Tov Coctail". You can't seem to get a good hold of the album because it's a bit of rollercoaster. Still seems weird to say something bad of this album, because the "bland" poprock songs are still undoubtetly good they just seem bland when placed with such a great hard rockers. Fine album still and "The Jackson Whites" just might be the best rock track of 2009.

Favourite song of the album:

The Jackson Whites

Other ass kickers; Tim Smith , Chutzpah! , Plastic Jebus

7. Vains Of Jenna-The Art Of Telling Lies

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e5/lizzydevine/cover.jpg

The americalized swedes bring out a damn fine rock n' roll album. The country men Hardcore Superstar did a bit better, but not much and that alone tells that this album rules. Album is full of sleaze rock spirit and there isn't a bad song in sight. For the album favourites I would rise the tracks "Everybody loves you when your dead", "Mind Pollution", a beautiful slower number "Paper Heart", "Get It On", "Enemy In Me" and the funky "I Don't Care". Infact it's a bit hard to pick favourites because the album is so solid all around. Good stuff.

Favourite song of the album:

I Don't Care

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDnkiBDajIU

Other ass kickers; Paper Heart , Get It On , Mind Pollution

6. Hardcore Superstar-Beg For It

http://cdon.fi/media-dynamic/images/product/00/04/17/25/94/3/bfaa8e03-f393-4acd-a346-b3a26e68d475.jpg

Hardcore Superstar doesn't fail. One's again they provide a great hardrock record full of raw energy and having even more metal in theyr sound. They are now days leaning more and more towards the Slave To Grind N' Subhuman Race-era Skid Row sound and that ain't a bad road to take. At first few listens didn't like "Beg For It" as much as the past two HCSS efforts but when listening more the album rivals equally against the great "Dreamin' In The Casket". What prevents this album rising straight to the top is that after the awesome start (This Worm's For Ennio->Hope For A Normal Life) the album loses a bit of the intensity and the few next songs ain't so memorable so the album doesn't flow as solidly as you wish it would be. Anyway it's a great album and should be heard by every rock fan.

Favourite song of the album:

Into Debauchery

Other ass kickers; Beg For It , Shades Of Grey, Hope For A Normal Life

5. The Prodigy-Invaders Must Die

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yqgCkpQ_vlg/Se89Pj_d2ZI/AAAAAAAAACY/YUanbTBWIJ4/s320/PRODIGY.jpg

Started getting more into dance and electronic music this year and The Prodigy is the one to thanks. "Invaders Must Die" is true ass kicker full of energy. While the todays rock albums tend to lean on having both fast and slower songs on the album, Invaders Must Die is just straight through energy blast with heavy beats. No slow shit just going apeshit with the songs like "Invaders Must Die", "Take Me To The Hospital", "Warrior's Dance", "Run With The Wolves" and "Piranha". FUN! Awesome live band, kickass album and deserves the number #5 spot on this list.

Favourite song of the album:

Take Me To The Hospital

Other ass kickers; Warrior's Dance , Invaders Must Die , Run With The Wolves

4. CAVO-Bright Nights Dark Days

http://i29.tinypic.com/2ziu8lc.jpg

A bit suprised that this album went so high on my this years favourite albums list. Disliked the album upon first listen, but slowly the Cavos simple, yet efficient, recipe started working on me. Catchy melodies, big choruses, radio friendly out put is Cavo's way to go and it works very well. While they sometimes remind me of bands like 3 Doors Down, they still have something unique that makes them easy to recognize. "Dark Days Bright Nights" is a good album throughout and can't be dismissed from the list because of good set of songs like "Champange", "Crash", "Let It Go", Cry Wolf", "Blame" and "We All Fall Down"

Favourite song of the album:

Blame

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98lcQ1CgiwQ

Other ass kickers; Champange , Crash , We All Fall Down

3. Papa Roach-Metamorphosis

http://www.mandalebase.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/tsvynrcwt4.jpg

Very solid rock blast from Papa Roach. No bad tracks on this effort. Good mix of rockers and slower songs, that seems to be todays rock scenes principal. Highlights for me are the headtearing opener "Change Or Die", sexy hardrocker "I Almost Told You That I Loved You", asskickin' "Lifeline", beautiful "Carry me" and the album closer "State Of Emergency". Rockers overshadow the slower material on this one too, but the mix is more stable than for example on The Wildhearts album. Very good album.

Favourite song of the album:

I Almost Told You That I Loved You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHs5cg5RIu8

Other ass kickers; Change Or Die , Lifeline , Carry Me

2. Burn Halo-Burn Halo

http://data0.zic.fr/miouzikol/mod_article395447_1.jpg

James Hart is back! And what a kickass hardrock album. Hart is one of the most underrated singers/musicians in my book and this album just proves it more. Rockers "Dirty Little Girl", "Anejo", "Our House" are the albums best part, but the slower tracks are also very nice, yet sometimes feel a bit cliché. But who cares? "Too Late To Tell You Now", "Saloon Song", "Falling Faster", "Back To The Start" are great. Very solid album with no bad songs and loads of good stuff. Would have been my favourite of the year, but Alice In Chains just did this solid album with a bit more depth. This is hands down the best debut album of the year

Favourite song of the album:

Dirty Little Girl

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFRwhwa7DME

Other ass kickers; Anejo , Our House , Falling Faster

1. Alice In Chains-Black Gives Way To Blue

http://andersonlibrary.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/alice-in-chains-black-gives-way-to-blue.jpg

What makes the Alice In Chainses comeback album this years best is simply the fact that's it's not too easy. While you can listen to, for example, Burn Halo, Papa Roach and Hardcore Superstar everyday they just don't have the same depth and they don't hold a candel to the feeling and atmoshmere of this album. When being in the right mood this album hits home good. Slower songs like "Your Decision", "Private Hell", "Black Gives Way To Blue" are fine examples of the great atmoshmere this album brings. The dark rock material is also there and it doesn't fail you; "Check My Brain", "Last Of My Kind", "A Looking In View", "Acid Bubble" are all kickass tracks. Hell, every track in this album is good. Glad to see Alice In Chains back and with such a great record.

Favourite song of the album:

Black Gives Way To Blue
