Jackie-O Motherfucker are memorably described on the flyer for this concert as "very psychedelic American acid rock" - begging the question at what point 'psychedelic' becomes 'very psychedelic'.

This description, together with JOMF's uncompromising name, might lead you to think they are a confrontational or even an aggressive bunch. However, for this show at least, nothing could be further from the truth.

JOMF lynchpin and leader, Tom Greenwood, looks in good humour - he smiles a lot and his fragile singing voice could even be classed as understated.

Where they part ways with the mainstream is in their loose unpredictable sound with songs which seem partly improvised with no well defined beginnings or endings. It all tends to evolve organically - not so much a quiet-loud post-rock vibe as a post-noise atmospheric swirl.

At Cesena, JOMF were a four piece : Greenwood plus two other guitarists and a drummer, a formation and sound that at times suggested a psyched version of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The key difference is that while Crazy Horse are clearly an integral unit who feed off each other's ideas , the four members of JOMF mostly looked focused on their own thing - four autonomous musicians rather than a united gang.

Still, the motherfuckers were on good form, kicking out some inspired jams to wow a small but appreciative crowd.

The lively support band were The Clever Square three fresh faced guys from Ravenna whose short and spikey songs are a cross between The Modern Lovers and The Jam. They sing in English and are fond of quirky (and lengthy) song titles like I Did Not Mean To Fall Asleep While We Were Having Sex or It's OK! And I Trust You, But I'd Like To Be 100% Sure Anyway.
