4 apr 2011, 23:42Sun 3 Apr – Mother Mother
The warm-up act was Whale Tooth "all the way from Toronto" (hhhmm). They did make up for that comment by encouraging the audience to vote for local talent The Sheepdogs on the cover of The Rolling Stone. Decent band, still need some polishing in stage presence. About the best warm-up act I've seen for a while (since We Were Lovers opened for Immaculate Machine). Radio 3 link for Whale Tooth - I like the "Clever" tune.
First time we've seen Mother Mother live. They were actually better than I thought they would be. The smoke machine was somewhat overdone. Opening song was O My Heart, and a lot of the set was from the second album. They did do a few tracks from Touch Up and fewer than I expected from the new album, EUREKA, though of course The Stand was played to an enthusiastic reception.
All in all, quite enjoyable.

1 nov 2009, 01:31Thu 29 Oct – Metric, Zeus - all ages show. It's nice that Metric do these to give their younger fans the opportunity to see them.
Just a few words:
Zeus - the quartet from T.O., as there are a number of artists with this name - wasn't impressive. Part of this was due to the technical crew - for example, vocals were often lost in the music. I was surprised at how well their covers of fairly old music went over with the young crowd. However, I think they have promise, and touring with bands of this level will only improve them.
Metric - wow. They were good when we last saw them a couple of years ago. Their stage presence has improved since then. Most of the music was from Fantasies, of course. They also played some of the best tracks of their older stuff (Dead Disco, Poster of a Girl, Handshakes, Monster Hospital, ...), and a couple that I've listened to a few times, but aren't in my favourites.
Closed with an acoustical number that really showcased Emily's vocal talents.
First time at that venue for a rock performance. Had suspected that it would be good. Turned out to be very good. Beer selection was atrocious. Good thing they can attract good acts.
