the howling: from the director of gremlins i was hoping for more. the opening had me, but the protagonist was just so boring after that i couldn't take it. leading men used to have mustaches, it makes them look like porn stars. like in prince of darkness. it was released a few months before an american werewolf in london, not surprising history has favored one more...

the wicker man: the director's cut! i had never seen this version before. totally rad. i shut the blinds for this one because people were mostly gone and all that nudity might not sit well with passers by. so now i'm just projecting movies on my living room wall. the soul of this movie is in the music, it's haunting. and the unlikable uptight protagonist makes the whole thing this conflict in the viewer about two extremes of sexuality. i could watch it again right now.

the halloween tree: a favorite from childhood. i discovered it at the video store in coronado when i was way young. it was a big influence on creeps and ghouls. perfect to play while little kids were still walking by. ray bradbury narrates. the score is beautiful. and even though the animation is cheap it isn't insulting to children. still a favorite.

we don't have any halloween decorations anymore so my idea to decorate was to project movies on the window. it was kind of fun to set up. they couldn't hear anything, but a lot of people stopped and stared. i started off by playing the first evil dead but then it got to the tree rape scene which was much more graphic than i remembered so i changed it to...

evil dead II: i guess i'm not an evil dead fan boy. it's enjoyable but i could have done without a lot of the first half. which is understandable considering they wanted to make the movie about him going back the the 13th century but couldn't afford it until army of darkness. if they condensed all three movies into one, i could get into that. ash is a cool hero because he can only barely handle what's happening to him until it gets so out of control he stops caring. he is truly a cinematic badass.

scanners: all i could remember was the guy's head blowing up in the beginning. i enjoyed it more this time around. apparently cameron vale was supposed to have no personality which is why is seems like the guy playing him is a bad actor. it's really all just about the body horror stuff.

new nightmare: the seventh elm street movie isn't terrible? not when wes craven is behind the wheel for the first time since the first. freddy kruger is over saturated, he's just not scary anymore so obviously the real ancient demon trapped in the elm street films can break out and wreck havoc on the real world specifically all the people involved in making the films. so the actress who played nancy in 1 and 3 has to save her son with help from an assorted cast of the previous films while wes craven is writing the script for the new nightmare. it's a rad idea which is why i detailed it here. the whole meta concept of the thing was fresh when they did it, and it's kind of a prelude to scream.

re-animator: campy gold. a re-watch. i think the anti-hero, herbert west, is what takes it from being an average gory 80s flick to being a classic. his intensity and sparingly used screen time anchors the movie. the serum he uses to reanimate the dead pops visually and the dead are creative. it's totally worth seeing.

i watched funny games because of the part where he rewinds the film to make the family lose. i read about it and it intrigued me. i imagine watching the movie without knowing about that part it would be more interesting. i think the word i should have put instead of enjoyable was interesting. is any haneke worth watching? / i like fallon, he's not hilarious to me but he's just such a nice guy i think he makes the perfect talk show host. but the episode is haunting without an audience, not necessarily funnier. i love talk shows, and i've had this idea for a long time that someday i really want to make a series about a talk show being made during the last days of humanity so the fallon episode was just further inspiration.

isis, is wow... and sissy is I KNOW. now i have to rewatch her other big ones, i've tried badlands like 3 times already haha. and 3 women which puts my mind on shelly duvall and how perfect it is that they're in a movie together. they just fit. carrie is amazing because even when you know what happens, which is an unavoidable part of watching the movie, you still spend the entire thing hoping it won't. the truth in the interaction between the girls is horrifying. and that one shot when the principal notices a bit of carrie's blood on the gym teachers shorts and is disgusted is one of the greatest insert shots of all time. it says so much about women and men, i could probably write an essay about carrie based on that shot if i needed too.

carrie was beautiful. have you seen the teaser for the remake next year with hit girl? oh man, it looks awful. after carrie i watched the original funny games, i wish i knew less about it, it would have been more enjoyable. and my mom just showed me the most interesting episode of late night with jimmy fallon i've ever seen: they sent the audience home to be safe and warm in the hurricane so they did the show to empty seats. it was eerie and quiet. a talk show for the post apocalypse

Hm well I guess that's true but it hasn't really occurred to me because k-pop has been a whole lot more interesting than American Pop the past few years imo. It also appeals to a lot of what I like in pop music so I'm not really complaining. Plus, pop music in general isn't ever going to be super different/experimental (term used loosely here) so I don't really come with any of those expectations when I listen to pop music. But yeah, I honestly think k-pop is one of the most interesting things happening in the world of music right now, /especially/ when coupled with Korean culture. I'm the most white korean you'll ever meet (i never went to Korean school/my korean sucks, i've never been to korea, i'm not a big fan of kimchi, etc.) but hearing a song like Glam's Party (XXO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5T62b-FxzxA) singing pro-lgbt lyrics is something just so interesting/fascinating/awesome imo. Plus, the song is amazing and sounds/looks like something on a Nick TV show.

haha big lol at m4m. and yea i know what you're talking about in that Mirror Mirror video ha. I actually really like the prechorus and chorus of that song a lot. And Volume Up is one of my favorite k-pop songs this year. Though, I think it's hilarious that there's a sax in that song, which is obviously just the producers riding on that trend which was /so/ 2011 :3 And I will say that I legitimately enjoy Bubble Pop (aside from the dubstep part) a good bit. I always found the part where's HyunA grinds with the guy in the Derrick Rose jersey to be quite symbolic of Korean culture because they're not even actually touching each other haha. It's interesting talking to koreans who think that Bubble Pop's video is like the most sexy video of all time because there's definitely sexier vids in the western world of pop. Though, I guess relative to a lot of other k-pop vids, it makes sense why they thought such a thing. I think HyunA's new single is meh.

of course, it probably would've been a whole lot more "important" if it wasn't banned.

k-pop has never had a song like that before as far as i know. and it's arguably the most important k-pop video/song this year (aside from Gangnam Style of course). It really challenges the idea of korean media's portrayal of women and the roles they have in k-pop. It also deals with double standards in regards to women vs. men and how they're perceived by people, as well as why Ga-In isn't necessarily being called a slut while HyunA is (though that definitely is because of the intentions behind making the vids/songs).

I'm not korean, ethnically or nationally, but I listen to and love kpop and feel that it enriches my life pretty appreciably. same thing with jpop. basically it seems like what you're saying is pretty close to "you can't/shouldn't appreciate art from people not in your direct realm of cultural experience and it is wrong if you do"

But he WAS there just like that girl was. He listened to and loved spice girls back when they were popular just like she did. He's talked before about how he was a huge fan of the spice girls and sarah mclachlan and tori amos during his teenage years, which he described as the worst years of his life, and how they helped him overcome a lot of difficulties in his life. His experience is inherently different because he is male but does that make it inherently worse?

That persons entire argument seems to be "you shouldn't sing this song because you're fat and male" except presented much more insultingly. That all strikes me as being pretty cut and dry sexist, and yeah, pretty offensive. And while he's the one who uses the word "invalid" she (I assume it's a she) is the one who implicitly brings that concept into the argument when she says stuff like "you and your little girl friends didn't pick which one you wanted to be. you did not learn the choreography at sleepovers." She's trying to claim ownership of the song basically, because she's a girl who loved the song when she was young. That doesn't seem valid in any way and using that belief to attack a guy for singing a song is silly at best.

oh and i watched the bieber video, which made me start watching lil b videos on youtube, and made my roomates ask me "what is that!?" but not in a good way like "what is that? it's so based, i feel saved" but like "how do you like that?" one of them offered to play me an ACTUALLY good song lol

show sounds pretty sweet! how old was the stuff? like k-dot stuff? cause i haven't listened to any of that stuff actually, have you? hopefully he'll be back in LA some time in the spring (should happen right?) and we'll be able to go. I also really love how your two TV references are NBC and Bravo as opposed to like NBC and HBO which is all I watch lol, the only other thing i can remember about workaholics is that one of the characters one time says "lets smoke weed about it" and that's always stuck with me

i couldn't resist, dled the leak, and its awesome! but yeah i haven't been back to fox theatre since ratatat (such simpler days) but I burned at that show and the moochers were way worse than security. i don't know how i feel about workaholics, sometimes i watch it and they smoke and i'm like "im doing that too! :D this fun!" other times i think it's really dumb. Noz i think once called it stella for bros, which sorta makes sense to me. also good to hear that you're still a top-notch student! work is easy for me, and while i have been getting drunk a lot more i've sort of given up on the clubs, they're weird! and rarely fun

no I run an ASUS but I'm sure it's the same - the DAC takes complete control and your volume buttons don't matter - it has the sound at a pure, unamplified level so that you hear no noise, totally bypassing the built in soundcard which is close to all sorts of electronic interference.

Well I believe that a usb DAC does indeed lift sound processing from the computer. If your computer is so clogged it's skipping music that may not help - it still has to send the info to the usb - but it probably would. You could also try cleaning it out a bit, getting rid of background stuff running.. but really a DAC is so useful anyway, it's worth having one for now and for whatever computer you get next. Plus you can connect it to any audio source... I use mine with the ipod touch pretty often in fact, a mini hi-fi stereo!
