Untitled Summer 2009

So, I made this mix for myself, and all of my friends and followers on Tumblr. In the past when I've made a mix, I've usually typed up a lengthy explanation of my song choices and such… and I'm generally of the belief that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, so here it is!

(The mix can be downloaded via my tumblr post - here)

- Blitzen Trapper - Miss Spiritual Tramp: I love Blitzen Trapper. Their most recent album, Furr, is undoubtedly their best, and I've found that its title track is usually one of the only BT tracks anyone hears. So I've chosen to put two BT songs not on Furr on this mix. Miss Spiritual Tramp is loud, fast, and full of distortions. I can't put my finger on why I love it so much, I just do.

- Glasvegas - Geraldine: I was hesitant to give Glasvegas a try, but when one of their songs was featured in the tv show Chuck and I found myself really enjoying it, I figured it was time. And this is what hooked me for good.

- Jason Anderson - July 4, 2004: Everything about this song is right for me. The sing-a-long. The jamming. The lyrics. Everything. I never get sick of hearing it.

- Slow Club - Let's Fall Back In Love: The way this song starts with such strong a Capella and clapping is so brilliant. It's really special and simple. I think you'd probably be a robot if it doesn't make you smile.

- Sondre Lerche - Everyone's Rooting For You: Sondre Lerche's Duper Sessions is one of my favorite albums. He's the genius behind all the music in the film Dan in Real Life.

- Billie the Vision & The Dancers - Summercat: The greatest song to ever been offered for free download on last.fm. It's just a fact.

- Motion City Soundtrack - It Had To Be You: I find that Motion City Soundtrack tends to polarize people. But this is a damn good song.

- Spoon - The Underdog: This is one of my absolute favorite songs. The clapping and the horns!

- The Thrills - This Year: Everyone, go listen to The Thrills, right now.

- Mystery Jets - Young Love: Also, go listen to Mystery Jets. I'm addicted. This and Two Doors Down have completely blown my mind. Laura Marling is also absolutely adorable featured in this song. Look up the music video on youtube. It's great.

- The Secret Handshake - Summer of '98: This is infectious.

- Barenaked Ladies - The Old Apartment: I listen to Barenaked Ladies a lot during the summer.

- Cake - Short Skirt/Long Jacket: It's Cake.

- Jamie Lidell - Hurricane: I love Jamie Lidell. I was between this track and Another Day, because they are my favorites.

- The Fire Theft - Summertime: I wish the Fire Theft made more music. Because I love everything I hear.

- fun. - At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be): I never make a mix without putting The Format on it. Well, this is half of that. Nate Ruess's new band, fun, is GREAT. This is the first single from their album Aim and Ignite, which is coming out mid-August.

- Two Tongues - Even If You Don't: I had high hopes for this side-project of Max Bemis (Say Anything) and Chris Conley (Saves the Day). I was also skeptical. But the album is so great, and this is my favorite track of theirs by far.

- Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin' (Tough Guys): Mamma's Boy was the Chromeo song that brought me in, but this is the song that hooked me for good.

- Death Cab For Cutie - Little Bribes: So I heard this playing in Hollister the other day, so my first instinct was to reject it from then onwards, but this is such a great song. It's definitely the stand-out on the Open Door EP.

- Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down - Bag of Hammers: I love love love love love Thao and anything she does.

- Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry: Such a good song! It's the only Cold War Kids song I really enjoy and never get sick of.

- Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks: Dreamy in all the right ways.

- Butch Walker - #1 Summer Jam: Butch Walker is shamefully underrated. He makes good music.

- Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - Handle With Care: Jenny Lewis, Ben Gibbard, M. Ward, and Conor Oberst. Need I say more?

- Blitzen Trapper - Sci-Fi Kid: Here's the second of my two BT tracks. The first time I ever heard Sci-Fi Kid was actually a fantastic Hood Internet remix of it, but this is the original version. And it's special.

- Joshua Radin - Vegetable Car: This is one of Joshua Radin's best.

- matt pond PA - Sunlight: matt pond PA is another staple for me. If you've never listened to them, do so.

- Pedro the Lion - Indian Summer: David Bazan makes cynicism cool.

- Frightened Rabbit - Old Old Fashioned: Frightened Rabbit is one of my new favorite bands and their album Midnight Organ Fight was probably the best album of 2008. This is one of my favorite tracks from that album.

- Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine: This is the roots. I rarely make a mix that doesn't have Marvin Gaye or the Temptations or something old school on it. I figure, if you look at a tracklist of a lot of unfamiliar music and don't recognize anything universal on it, you're not going to want to hear it. So this is my universal song. It grounds everything that came before it.
