QUOTES, JUNE 2009: The Valley Arena, mewithoutYou, Kevin Devine, Mae

\\\

*** MEWITHOUTYOU ***

"We're not up there trying to come to your city to have church… We're trying to be a band and are expressing ourselves as artists. That's what every band does."

""I always imagine that if we're someone worth listening to, and see that one of the songs is written in Arabic and says "Allah" three times – that they're listening to that song and reading the lyrics of that song from the perspective that the band that they're listening to believes in and is very Christian-centered."

- Mike Weiss, guitarist of mewithoutYou

*** THE VALLEY ARENA ***

"There's a growing sense of the death of the indie rock band as we knew it when we got into bands and became really passionate about trying to give our all. has kind of splintered off into… the pure art scene of bands and then the huge festival Warped Tour scene of bands, and the divide has just gotten bigger and bigger. We were always somewhere in the middle. At the time that we started, it felt like there were other bands in that middle ground, and it feels like that has kind of disappeared. So, We Died is kind of like we're feeling like we're the last bastions of that particular niche."

"I'm always surprised if I'm bored and Google the band's name, at the number of blogs and magazines I've never even heard of liked one of the records. "Meanwhile, you spend so much effort trying to get it accepted in more traditional, larger outlets, and not really paying much attention to those who really like your record and will do the most to support you, you know? Through the years, you work with labels and managers and publicists… and you kind of forget the fact that you can talk to these guys directly. Our whole strategy for promoting this album is going direct and doing it all with friends and people we've met along the way."

– Warren Woodward, vocalist of The Valley Arena

*** MAE ***

"We may not be making any money, but we're reaching our fans and even their entire families."

"We have a responsibility like this when people look up to you. The person you are bleeds into the music you make."

– Zach Gehring, guitarist of Mae

*** KEVIN DEVINE ***

"If you don't like it and other people like it, I'm sure there are other people who have that career and some of them are probably very rich, but I have to like it."

"I'd like to think that you get a little better and a little focused . If I was writing the same songs at 29 that I was at 18, I would have a real problem with that – both aesthetically and emotionally."

Kevin Devine, songwriter
