Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score. If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference. You can compute your own score at http://anthony.liekens.net/pub/scripts/last.fm/eclectic.php

My eclectic score is currently

While I find this a less than accurate way to determine how eclectic one is, it can be a bit indicative. I got: 97/100 The Human Abstract, BTBAM, SikTh, The Fall of Troy, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Team Sleep, KoRn, Mudvayne, Limp Bikit, Snot, Ensiferum, Korkiplaani, Equilibrium, Finntroll, Arkona, Daylight Dies, Hanging Garden, Ghost Brigade, Katatonia, Novembers Doom, Cire, The Mayan Factor, Fair to Midland, Emptyself, Opus Dai, Those Poor Bastards, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Jay Munly (2), The Denver Gentlemen, Murder By Death, Lunatic Soul, Division By Zero, Riverside, Votum, Quidam, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, Peach, Rishloo, Indukti, Red Snapper, Skalpel, Jaga Jazzist, Amon Toblin, The Cinematic Orchestra, Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks, Sons of Perdition, Lonesome Wyatt and Rachel Brook, Myssouri, Caedmon’s Call, Audio Adrenaline, DC Talk, Third Day, Newsboys, Georg Friedrich Handel (2), Georg Philipp Telemann (2), Johann Sebastian Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, Franz Joseph Haydn, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Fantomas, Mike Patton, Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi, Polkadot Cadaver, The Alter Boys, Tub Ring, Nuclear Rabbit, Stolen Babies

Leaving aside the question of why you'd want to do this, it only works (if at all) for someone with fairly standard tastes. If your tastes are for artists who are listened to by very few other people, then the "similar artists" will be the music that you listen to, but may be very different from each other, in completely different genres. Your tastes would come out as pretty homogeneous by this calculation. To take the extreme case, someone's top twenty artists might each be completely different from the others, yet her eclecticism score be extremely low. This is the root of the problem with all these apps: they rely either on Last.fm's misnaming of "similar artists", or on people's tagging (which is often wildly inaccurate, not to say silly).

See, for example, The London Jazz Chamber Group; the "similar artists" are: Alâeddin Şensoy, Θεόδουλος Βακανάς, Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, Panayiotis League, & Cem Mutlu, Αντώνης Διαμαντίδης (Νταλγάς), Ortaköy Maftirim Chorus, Ανδρέας Αριστίδου & Κυριάκος Ζίττης, Hossein 'Omoumi & Sima Bina, and Στράτος. Why? Because I listen to them all; none of them bears any similarity to The London Jazz Chamber Group.
