5 jan 2006, 14:34Late last year I got email from Apple, asking me to take a poll about the music on my computer. I was filling it out just fine until I got to one question...
"Where do you get your music from".
All the "popular" suspects where there: online music services, ripping my own CDs, ripping other people's CDs, file sharing services...
There was no selection for "purchased or downloaded direct from artist's website". There wasn't anything I could honestly fill in for that part of my collection. I sent mail to Apple and to the people running the survey, but got no response...
Thanks to mp3blogs like 3hive.com, a large part of my collection comes direct from artists. How much of the "missing revenue" the RIAA complains about is represented by artists and fans going around the label system altogether... without involving the "evil" file sharing services?
10 aug 2005, 19:38Some days I'll browse MP3 blogs and read the reviews and listen to a few pieces that sound interesting, which is how I found Jonathan Richman, Paul Copeland and Devendra Banhart. Some days, when I'm in a rush, I'll just download everything that's come up on 3hive.com or the first few sites at mp3blogs.com, stick them in my library, and let them come up in Party Shuffle in a week or so. That's how I ended up listening to The Bosstones and KLEZSKA.
It's kind of like my long habit of buying the cheap mix CDs at gas stations and convenience stores. I never know what I'll get, and probably won't like most of it, but every now and then I find a gem like Mr. Moran.
