Fri 13 Apr – Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2012
FRIDAY
Arctic Monkeys — They seem disappointed, if not a little bit angry to be here. (Are those just British faces?) Traveled all the way from England to the middle of the California desert, only to encounter gloom and rain. Nevertheless, they sound crisp and I am surprised I still remember three albums’ worth of lyrics.
The Rapture — Ah, yes. You shout a lot and whine, too. Music is repetitive without any build. As soon as we commit to exiting, they play our one song. We dance and laugh and Lara says “This is the cornerstone of our friendship!”
Explosions in the Sky — I wiggle myself THREE bodies away from the front, they close with “The Birth and Death of the Day,” it starts to rain, I almost cry. It’s spiritual (but not religious) and I haven’t felt this happy in a very long time. I missed the Black Keys with Lara as well as M83 to be here and I am glad.
Swedish House Mafia — Confetti! Fireworks! Lazers! Random Flo samples and lots and lots of dancing. Favorite Main Stage performance.
+ LA Riots, the Sheepdogs, Grouplove
- Neon Indian, M83, the Horrors
SATURDAY
Borgore — DAY DRINKING x DUBSTEP = DRUUUUUNK DANCING. SO GOOD.
The Shins — I know almost all the songs. I think about the first time I saw them. I was with Mom and I miss her, especially since she baked me a loaf of bread for this trip. Nothing but love.
David Guetta — You are overrated and boring; we leave.
Miike Snow — So bouncy and fun! Lara is increasingly smiley and I feel good. Also, is that a child onstage? No, it’s Lykke Li.
Radiohead — The crowd is a total clusterfuck, so we sit in the back and listen to a strong 90-minute set. They never play “Creep,” I become very sleepy. Radiohead do not change my life, but I am happy to have seen them at least once.
+ Childish Gambino (audio only: drunk, eating lunch), Zeds Dead, Manchester Orchestra
- Tijuana Panthers, Bon Iver
SUNDAY
Santigold — She is fun, sweet and a solid performer. I’ve always liked her and the horse made my day. Back-up dancers know how to bounce.
Justice — 25 minutes late to your hour-long set. You are NOT Daft Punk. I will not wait for you.
Girl Talk — Druuuuunk. I dance like a maniac and know so many of the samples. I hear my favorite ODB and the Strokes. Highlight = Basement Jaxx x Aaliyah.
Florence + the Machine — Ethereal, spooky, grand. I’m sold.
Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg — Wiz Khalifa. 50 Cent? TUPAC HOLOGRAM. LOLOLOL EMINEM! Voice too hoarse to successfully and appropriately “SNOOOOOOPUH,” but I try anyways. By far the best way to end Cochillahhhhhh.
+ Band of Skulls
- First Aid Kit, Flux Pavilion & Doctor P, the Hives
