That sounds really good, Mathew. How was his performance with the whole band? I agree with Phil about Clear Moon/Ocean Roar. I find the latter very difficult to listen to, and lacking a lot of 'substance', for lack of a better word; I actually struggle to listen to it in entirety. Speaking of Mark Kozelek, could you recommend me one of his Sun Kil Moon albums? I've listened to Red House Painters rather a lot, but never taken the time to listen to his more recent music, which I should probably take this opportunity to do. The Kronos Quartet are a string Quartet. They work quite extensively with Philip Glass, who scored the movie of Mishima's life. The album you saw me listening to was 'The Kronos Quartet plays Philip Glass', which I'd say you should listen to. The fifth movement in String Quartet No. 5 is absolutely magnificent. Probably one of my favourite pieces of 'classical' music. I daresay you'd enjoy it as well.

I trust you'll have a good time, Mathew. Are you going with your girlfriend (fiancée?)? Does she like Phil's music? Be interesting to see him playing with a full band this time around. See if Phil remembers a brown-haired boy in London who couldn't find the words to express how much his music meant to him and ended up muttering a string of inaudible noises that corresponded to something resembling praise for his music. I'd guess he wouldn't, anyway. He probably meets an awful lot of eager fans, plus I'm largely forgettable. As always, I hope life is treating you well.

Yeah, he is a phenomenal songwriter. Speaking of great songwriters, how are you enjoying Ocean Roar? I can't decide if I like it better than Clear Moon or not.

Hey, excellent charts! I see you've been listening to lots of Smog lately. What's your favorite album by him? So far, I really like Knock Knock, but I need to hear more.

That's no problem; I'm just as prone to doing similar. I like Clear Moon a lot. Through the Tree's Part 2 is really wonderful; I get such chills when the female voice starts singing. The title track is still something I've yet to comprehend, but overall, it's just as good as anything else Phil has lovingly crafted. I hope your feelings were satisfied with it too.

in the spirit of this shoutbox, i feel it necessary to avoid the use of capital letters. i'm sorry, mathew, that i've been so terrible at keeping up with you of late. as stuart rightly points out below, you are an inspiration to me and to my way of thinking; living without your influence upon my life would be a terrible tragedy. whether you choose to believe this or not is entirely down to you, i'm rather sure of it myself, though. i'm really glad you met phil. i hope that i get the chance to do the same. i have no idea what i would say to somebody (not so unlike yourself) who has had such a profound impact upon my life without ever being aware of my existence. i am looking forward to seeing him regardless of any reservations. plus, i love seeing the city of london. i shall message you updates as regards my address now. i hope you can send me your address in reply, because i should like to send you something or other, if you'll let me, of course.

i feel that pedantry is fine, as long as it is a solely personal pursuit. what a hilarious encounter! it is remarkable how quickly the "anti-capitalism" protests have spread across the globe, though. i don't know how i feel about them, though. i was told an interesting bit of information the other week- they were saying how your political opinions are formed in your teenage years, and the next point in your life you are most likely to change them (drastically) would then be in your forties. i found this fascinating and wonder how much truth is behind it.

i am very happy that you are happy. i am keeping well, thanks for asking. i have followed your advice for this post, and have chosen to omit capital letters. whilst i am usually a pedant about grammatical issues on the whole, i thought i'd ignore the rules by which our language is so unjustly governed, on this occasion for your amusement. i hope you are enjoying hearing about the recent democratic elections in tunisia, the "arab spring" has truly been a pleasure to follow and i hope these nations can experience what we take for granted, finally. you are inspirational often, mathew, and these words from your grandmother are empowering. i cannot say much for our compatibility, but i feel our connection is beyond that which an algorithm can model, so i wouldn't worry too much.

I'm reading a penguin classics version translated by Joseph Laredo. I'm afraid I forgot which translation it was you recommended me, but I found this version for £1, so went ahead with it anyway. I also picked up a copy of 'The Plague' and 'The Rebel'. Have you ever read anything by Dostoevsky? I only ask because I can't help but notice an immense amount of similarities between 'Crime and Punishment' and 'The Stranger' - perhaps not due to the writing style, but certainly the character's attitudes, concerns and apathy, as well as the storyline.

I've no idea. I guess this brings up the problem of artists who appear to 'sell out'... it seems that it's hard to actually make money in the music industry these days, and hence bands sign to major labels and release albums that appeal less to the band and more to the wider audience. I wish I could help him out... but I don't think there's anything I could do. I wish I had a spare $450 so I could buy the 8-track as a gift for him, so he could keep it and keep recording music. I'm really glad you're getting to see Phil! That's really great. I have no idea how he'll fit in at a festival, but I hope it'll be really great, and perhaps you get the chance to meet him afterwards or something.
