Malajube

Tue 8 May – Malajube

Well, here is my review of the malajube concert on Tuesday. The concert as at The Spitz, a place I'd never been before. It's really nice. Very small and tucked away in the attic above a restaurent, it has a very unique atmosphere. It's very cosy with a wooden floor and a sloping attic roof.

The support was by Eugene McGuinness, a one man acoustic artist from Liverpool. His music wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It's the sort you'd have playing in a bar or café as background music.

Then, 30 minutes later Malajube came on stage and burst into song. They really are a good band live, though I was really disappointed with how Montréal -40°C was performed. I thought they played it too early during the set (3rd song) and for some reason it just wasn't as good as on CD. However, to counter this they perfomed Étienne D'août to perfection. It was possibly the most inspirational song I have seen live in any concert so far (The only other competition being from dirty pretty things when they performed france 2). I have had the song on near constant repeat since the concert. It was a shame there was feedback from the mic during the song which slightly ruined the calm effect, but the performance out weighed that by so far.

I found the front man Julien Mineau was not very much at ease during the breaks between songs and only seemed to enjoy themselves when they were actually playing.

I think the highlights were definitely when the band played Étienne D'août, Robot Sexy and Le métronome, the last 2 which were as their encore. Other songs that stuck out were Pate Filo, Le Crabe and Casse-Cou, a song I never really liked, but is absolutely awesome live! the other song that really stuck was the second song, which was instrumental, and Ihave no idea what it was, but it was great! If anybody knows, please inform me!

I now can't wait to go back there and see johnossi in 2 weeks. That is bound to be an awesome gig!

I'm also still deciding if should go and see either the kissaway trail or thirteen senses next week (or both, or neither).
