Album of The Year 2012 24-11

24. Islet - Illuminated People

Label:Shape Records
Genre: Experimental Rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywUT-Z43lT8

Why?:Wales has got this habit of producing some seriously good rock music, Islet approach theirs with the same sense of individuality that one expects from a Future of The Left/ Super Furies. Formed from the ashes of "Victorian English Gentleman's Club "as recently as 2010, their debut benefits from the collective confidence derived from 2 well received mini albums. Experimental enough to give long term value but never forgetting to write tunes.

23. Carter Tutti Void - Transverse

Label: Mute
Genre: Electronic/ Industrial/Experimental

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYMVxfkw6mY

Why?: I'll leave this one to John Doran editor of the Quietus (http://thequietus.com/articles/08295-carter-tutti-void-transverse-review), as he was actually there

"If pressed, before hearing this recording or even knowing this was getting released, I would have happily told you this was one of the best gigs I’d seen in the last five years. So it comes as something of a relief to be able to declare this album utterly remarkable. (Not that the essence of a great gig is necessarily always captured by a mere recording but thankfully it was on this one. Thirty plus listens in and I’m still utterly captivated by Transverse.) But was there more to this inverse perfect storm than just a triumvirate of forward looking, mould breaking musicians being caught on a particularly great night? I’d suggest yes."

22. Peaking Lights - Lucifer

Label: Weird World
Genre: Lo-fi dub

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IDBBgDIXOE

Why?: A worthy successor to 2011's 936 which came within a hairs breadth of topping last years run down. The consistency of the aforementioned record isn't quite there and the rough edges may have been removed from the dreamy, dubby sound but they remain an utter treat to the ears.

21. Lotus Plaza - Spooky Action At Distance

Label: Kranky
Genre: Shoegaze

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NhJzOaToZI

Why?: A very different record to 2009's "The Floodlight Collective, which was a sleeper hit of that year for me. An obvious attempt to remove some of the ambient obfuscation of that record that made that record more difficult than perhaps it needed to be is a double edged sword. The positive is the tracks jump out at you taking less time to register in the consciousnesses, though it is at the expense of its replay value

20. Tindersticks - The Something Rain

Label: Lucky Dog
Genre: Indie Rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bx-KWrVP70

Why?:

19. Jessica Pratt - Jessica Pratt

Label: Birth
Genre: Folk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brkeGKyr1vw

Why?:

18. Goat - World Music

Label: Rocket
Genre:Alt- Rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swOjaFXnDeA

Why?:

17. Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, The Congos - Icon Give Thanks

Label: RVNG Intl.
Genre: Dub

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxukaECb2Cw

Why?: This looked like a cracking idea from it's announcement. The Congo's, the reggae vocal group who cut the classic "Heart of the Congo's" with Lee Scratch Perry back in 1977, with Sun Araw (Cameron Stallones) an underground LA based musician and guitar and synth player of some repute and M. Geddes Gengras another mainstay of renowned LA record label Not Not Fun. It sounds exactly as it should with Stallones & Geddes Gengras providing the modern dub template for the Congos to lay down their trademark vocal harmonies.

16. Juila Holter - Ekstasis

Label: RVNG Intl.
Genre: Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZObpr26UkkQ

Why?:

15. Dr. John - Locked Down

Label: Nonesuch Records
Genre: Funk/Blues

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23FmW6ma7OI

Why?:

14. Ty Segall & White Fence - Hair

Label: Drag City
Genre: Psych/Garage Rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByfQVDOCacg

Why?:

13. Death Grips - The Money Store

Label: Epic
Genre: Experimental Hip Hop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DigtCrO77L8

Why?: Even considering the critical adulation heaped upon 2011's mixtape Ex-Military, it would have been tricky to predict that Death Grips follow up would be recorded for LA Reid (of American X Factor fame) & Epic records. I is fair to say that their new home did nothing to soften the music of this noise/rock/rap

12. Tame Impala - Lonerism

Label: Domino
Genre: Neo - Psychedelia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ7hdF7Xyns

Why?:

11. Scott Walker - Bisch Bosch

Label: 4AD
Genre: ExperiMENTAL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ih7KzKLLWA

Why?: Not since the great Captain Beefheart cut Trout Mask Replica have we seen a musician so determined to go one their own path, with an almost disdainful attitude for the popular convention of the day and when making this point I feel two things are worthy of mention. Firstly this is a man in his seventies, secondly this is the man who cut "The Sun A'int Gonna Shine any more." It is understatement to say this is one of those albums that rewards persistence. On first listen it is discordant, has little identifiable structure, lyrics that appear to be nonsensical and contains among other things a recording of wild flatulence.
