I'd been looking forward to this gig for months but when it actually cam down to it, it far exceeded my expectations. I was also suprised how busy it was, there must have been at least 1000 people there - yet last time we saw Fennesz in London, there were less than 100! And I consider him to be much more well-known and much more accessible than any of the 'sounds artists' playing on this line-up. It made me wonder how many of them knew precisely what to expect of the evening, and how many had come out of curiosity…

I've been requested to write about my favourite tracks and why. It amazes me that anyone is interested but I thought I would write a few quick notes nonetheless. For the casual broswer though, I'm a pretty obsessive tagger (I'm an archivist by trade so I catalogue things for a living and it comes naturally…) which should give you an idea of my favourites and their related moods.

sooooo…. tate modern's having this big re-hang whereby they try to make up for having a bit of a neff collection by dividing it up into themes rather than historical periods. I wouldn't get too excited about this if you've ever been there before as it's likely to mean them just doing what they usually do, and moving works from one end of the building to another.

HOWEVER they are putting on loads of cool events to celebrate, best of all: monolake, alva noto and ryoji ikeda all playing for half an hour each on Monday 29th May. Which…

Grails were ok but not especially thrilling, post rock of the mogwai variety, which has kidn fo been done to death a bit now in my opinion.

Boris were good, although not as good as I'd hoped. I only have the Akuma No Uta album, which starts out as big doom drones and then goes into silly japanese punk rock. The gig took a similar mix of genres, which I enjoyed, but then also added in some slower more 70s stoner rock, which wasn't so good. So just back from Berlin and washing the cigarette smoke out of my clothes still. God, none of those people are going to live past 40 at this rate. Have they not heard of lung cancer?

We only went out clubbing twice in the end. First night, the alarm went off after 2 hours of disco napping and we swtiched it off and slept through for another 13 hours. My much beloved Boris are playing in Camden, London in a mere few weeks time. Hurrah! I only found out about them shortly after their last London date so am very excited to be seeing them. I grew up liking metal (had my first Iron Maiden album when I was 10) but have drifted into other camps since then as I found very little that excited me any more, but great chugging guitars will always be my first love.

In other eclectic music news, the new 'The Trip' compilation by Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey of Pulp is fantastic. I loathe the term chill-out but it's certainly a very relaxed album that would be perfect for late nights and sunday mornings. Instantly gives you the kind of record…

So I saw Liars last night and they were superb! 9 out of 10, easily. They played mostly songs from the new album, Drum's Not Dead but also some from the last album. I hadn't been so keen on that, on record or live, but the songs worked really well within the context of this set. I was surprised by how much more aggressive they came across this time, especially as the new album is very soporific, I think (in a good way). They played some of the videos from the accompanying DVD behind them, but I don't know why…

Ah yes, London is in the middle of a cold snap and, since we generally share a weather front with Northern Europe, so is Berlin. Except 4 degrees colder. I have been watching the 10 day forecasts with bated breath, and been studying webcams of Alexanderplatz and trying to work out if there is more snow or less. And trying to work out what clothes one should wear clubbing when it is -4. I'd rather it snowed whilst we were there than rained. I hate rain.
