The series starts off innocently enough - a tourist exploring a world carried on the back of a turtle. It's basically a spoof of fantasy novels at this point.
2. The Light Fantastic || I Ran Away
This is one of the few character-specific songs that suggested itself: Rincewind, the star of the first two novels, is a professional coward, with his own special way of surviving everything.
3. Equal Rites || Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
The first novel to star Granny Weatherwax is about a girl who does wizardry and wants to study in the big Discworld city, Ankh-Morpork. And everyone knows girls can't be wizards. So here's a song about woman and magic.
4. Mort || (Don't Fear) The Reaper
Death - the skeleton with a scythe, takes on an apprentice. True story - when Mort was going to be released in the USA, the publishers asked him to rewrite the book because The American public aren't ready for a sympathetic Death figure. Months later, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey was released.
5. Sourcery || I Just Wanna Be God
A tale about how power corrupts. Also the Patrician gets turned into a newt! (he gets better). A small boy with more magical power than the Discworld has seen in centuries appoints himself Arch Chancellor of the Unseen University for wizards.
6. Wyrd Sisters || Lady Macbeth
The first proper witches book and the first straight parody, of Macbeth, as the King of Lancre is the victim of bloody murder and his murderer takes the throne, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat have to set things to right in the Kingdom.
7. Pyramids || Another Pyramid
Set in Djelibeybi (see what he did there?) the Disc's Egypt equivalent, about a prince who trains in Ankh-Morpork, and returns to his old country, bringing a whole new perspective to his old ways.
8. Guards! Guards! || Power of the Dragonflame
A cult of people bring a dragon to rain havoc on the streets of Ankh-Morpork, and the City Watch, led by Captain Vimes, has to stop them. This is for those of you who have played the Discworld computer game, and who hear the chanting of the robed figures in this.
9. Eric || I Want It All
Pratchett retells the Faust story with a nerdy teenager. Also the triumphant return of Rincewind the cowardly Wizzard from the first two novels.
10. Moving Pictures || Hollywood
Look, you really want me to explain this one?
11. Reaper Man || Zombie Jamboree
What happens if the Grim Reaper goes missing? We end up up to our armpits in undead, that's what!
12. Witches Abroad || Fairy Godmother Song
Granny Weatherwax's sister Lilith is a godmother, more concerned with giving people want she thinks they ought to want than what she knows they really need.
13. Small Gods || God Thinks...
Sometimes religion isn't about the god they claim to do the work of.
14. Lords and Ladies || When I Am Queen
So, the Queen of the Elves wants back into the Discworld,, and aims to become Queen of Lancre. This was a very difficult song to find, and it's still, I think, the weak link.
15. Men at Arms || I'm Your Gun
OK, so the novel about the Disc's first Gonne isn't' nearly so full of penis metaphor. But it is about a weapon that talks to you and seduces you with power. So that'll do, right?
16. Soul Music || Blame It On The Love Of Rock N Roll
This is possibly my favourite book, because I adore books that he filled up with references just because he finds them funny. Music with Rocks in comes to the Discworld and begins to take over people's heads.
17. Interesting Times || I Like Chinese
A book about the Orient and all things Asian. I quite like these lets' see how many references we can fit into one book jobs.
18. Maskerade || Phantom of the Opera
Another straight-up parody, starring the Witches.
19. Feet of Clay || Iron Man
So the Golems make a Golem. And that golem goes insane and starts killing people. And the Watch have to stop him. Or solve the mystery first.
20. Hogfather || What's This?
A book about a Skeleton who fills the job of the Hogfather and becomes fascinated with Hogswatch. A song about a skeleton who fills the job of Santa Claus and becomes fascinated with Christmas.
21. Jingo || War
Terry, what's the next book about? It's about the uselessness of war - a C4 documentary shown in 1997.
22. The Last Continent || Down Under
Technically, the mysterious continent XXXX isn't actually 'down under', seeing as the Discworld is, well, Disc-shaped. But it is filled with things that can kill you horribly. Like Vegemite. Mate.
23. Carpe Jugulum || Ho! For The Death of Time
My favourite title of the whole lot, this features vampires who overcome the traditional vampire weaknesses to become a real threat
24. The Fifth Elephant || Of Wolf and Man
This is about a lot of things - diplomacy, sexual identity, families, relationships, shameful pasts, really bad puns. But it's also about werewolves.
25. The Truth || News of the World
The first book since Small Gods to have a completely new cast, this tells the story of William de Worde and his attempts to manage Ankh-Morpork's first daily newspaper.
26. Thief of Time || A Question of Time
Susan Sto Helit, Death's granddaughter, has to race to stop the son of Time from building a clock that will end the world. Oh noes! This book brings on a while new meaning to Death by Chocolate.
27. Night Watch || My Back Pages
A favourite of everyone who isn't a sucker for really bad puns, parodies and Watch books with Angua (i.e. people who aren't me), and one of the first instances of events of one book (Thief of Time) having a direct effect on people from other 'series'. Commander Vimes of the City Watch ends up back in his own past.
28. Monstrous Regiment || The Cruel War
Pterry takes on the great literary tradition of girls dressing up as boys and running off to join the army. And on the way he covers everything, as is his wont. A wonderful cast of new characters, and his first gay couple.
29. Going Postal || Return to Sender
The industrialisation of Ankh-Morpork continues as another new character, Moist von Lipwig, is charged with reviving the postal service.
30. Thud! || Short People
Trolls and dwarfs are altercating in Ankh-Morpork and it's up to the Watch to try and stop riots in the street. And it is revealed why all the new characters recently have been a good thing - the old cast books are losing direction, and it's kind of hard to say what this book is about.
31. Making Money || Opportunity (Let's Make Lots of Money)
With the decline (I think) in quality of the Watch books, hooray for the return of Moist von Lipwig! This time bringing his own special approach to the Ankh-Morpork mint. And there're clockwork vibrators, so what's not to love about this book?
The Last Hero and the putative childrens' novels left out for solely pedantic reasons. My thanks go to stealthmunchkin for suggesting many of the tracks.
All tracks grouped together under the tag discworld
