Om mig

First: Borges.

Of all the streets that blur in to the sunset,
There must be one (which, I am not sure)
That I by now have walked for the last time
Without guessing it, the pawn of that Someone

Who fixes in advance omnipotent laws,
Sets up a secret and unwavering scale
for all the shadows, dreams, and forms
Woven into the texture of this life.

If there is a limit to all things and a measure
And a last time and nothing more and forgetfulness,
Who will tell us to whom in this house
We without knowing it have said farewell?

Through the dawning window night withdraws
And among the stacked books which throw
Irregular shadows on the dim table
There must be one which I will never read.

There is in the South more than one worn gate,
With its cement urns and planted cactus,
Which is already forbidden to my entry,
Inaccessible, as in a lithograph.

There is a door you have closed forever
And some mirror is expecting you in vain;
To you the crossroads seem wide open,
Yet watching you, four-faced, is a Janus.

There is among all your memories one
Which has now been lost beyond recall.
You will not be seen going down to that fountain
Neither by white sun nor by yellow moon.

You will never recapture what the Persian
Said in his language woven with birds and roses,
When, in the sunset, before the light disperses,
You wish to give words to unforgettable things.

And the steadily flowing Rhone and the lake,
All that vast yesterday over which today I bend?
They will be as lost as Carthage,
Scourged by the Romans with fire and salt.

At dawn I seem to hear the turbulent
Murmur of crowds milling and fading away
They are all I have been loved by, forgotten by;
Space, time, and Borges now are leaving me.

Second: Wilco.

Jesus, don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can combine anything you want

I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun

Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around

Don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can come by any time you want

I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun

Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around

Voices whine
Skyscrapers are scraping together
Your voice is smoking
Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around

Our love
Our love
Our love is all we have

Our love
Our love is all of God's money
Everyone is a burning sun

Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning your orbit around

Voices whine
Skyscrapers are scraping together
Your voice is smoking
Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around

Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around
Last cigarettes are all you can get
Turning your orbit around

Third: One thousand great lies.

I admit it. I am a complete heartless bastard (wink) when it comes to music. Maybe you can tell by some of my shouts. I love music, not all music, but I love good music. Unfair as it is, I get to decide. When I first meet people, I ask what CD is in their player. If I don't like the answer, it's over. Get the fuck away. You listen to "new country?!?" Piss off!!! Conversely, I have agreed to date a woman knowing no more about her than the fact she loves Bob Dylan. That says it all; if you "get" good music, you just get "it". It's that simple.

For me it started when I was very young. I loved to listen to the radio. When I was 4 or 5, I remember turning off the radio during a Beach Boy's song because I wanted to listen to it after my nap. When I awoke, I was shocked to hear a different song. I didn't quite understand the whole continuous playlist thing...

Then I started stealing my older sibling's 45s and albums. Elton John, Hall and Oates, John Denver, BTO... all sorts of stuff. Fun for little kid, but kinda crappy stuff.

When I was about 10, I started listening to the Beatles and that pushed forward my musical tastes and desire to hear "good" music by a quantum leap. In my early teens, I was floored by Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. Then I got into this crazy Zeppelin phase. It lasted from ages 15 to 23. I wouldn't listen to another fucking artist or band. All Zeppelin, all the time. Or the occasional Beatles record. At parties, my friends would want to hear Def Leppard or U2. "Fuck off!" I roared. I'm a big guy, 6 feet 5 inches tall... So, we all listened to Zeppelin. I would leave the room to take a piss and return to find someone had put on some shit like Poison (which I secretly enjoyed). That tape would go out the window and the Zep would be restored.

Today, my friends often recall what a fucking bastard I was for forcing my musical tastes on everyone within earshot. But, we all still listen to the stuff, like the Beatles and the Stones, and of course Led Zep, I played back then. The Leppard and Posion has not aged as well... suitable for 80s parties and little more.

Now, thanks to the "internets" I can hear so much new stuff and old, old stuff. I love it. I have calmed down a bit, but still will lash out if I hear crap on the CD player. Rock on!
