CDs for Erin Epley (2008), pt. 2

CD # 2: Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

That is an Emmylou Harris record that isn't even represented on this list. Why? Because I laugh in the face of your rules! Ha!

Anyhow…

1. "Long Monday," John Prine

Prine is seriously underrated. I'd call him the poor man's Dylan but that would be unfair to both of them.

As a sidenote, as I notice that more and more of my lists are populated with songs Jillian Wormington exposed me to, I think I have to say that she was my favorite girlfriend ever. That probably speaks more to my own incalculable selfishness than anything else.

2. "Howlin' at the Wolf," Hank Williams

If you can get over your pretensions and allow yourself to get into serious country music and thus open yourself up to the Hank Williams experience you will be a better person and 2 or 3 steps closer to God.

3. "Can't Let Go," Lucinda Williams

4. "Look at Miss Ohio," Gillian Welch

Public Radio International-- Look at Miss Ohio

5. "I'm Alive," Shelby Lynne

I am completely obsessed with Lynne's 2003 album Identity Crisis and this is my favorite song off that disc. It might just be my favorite song ever. The understated but superbly executed Hammond Organ and steel guitar fills (I think I am right about the instruments but who knows) push it over the top for me.

I could (and have) stared at that picture for hours.

6. "Condi, Condi," Steve Earle

A country reggae tune about having the hots for Condoleeza Rice should not be good. But this is pretty wonderful.

7. "Two More Bottles of Wine," Emmylou Harris

8. "Sin Wagon," Dixie Chicks

9. "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," Billy Bragg & Wilco

For those that don't know, this is from a project wherein Bragg & Wilco recorded songs from lyrics left behind by Woody Guthrie.

10. "Shotgun Willie," Willie Nelson

11. "A Little Blues," The Be Good Tanyas

Frazey Ford's lead vocals are simply amazing. You must do yourself a favor and check this band out–even if Americana is not your thing.

12. "Little Boy Blue," Will Oldham

aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy

13. "Wagon Wheel," Old Crow Medicine Show

14. "The Race is On," George Jones

15. "Little Boxes," Malvina Reynolds

This song is most famous nowadays for being the original theme song for the Showtime series Weeds.

16. "Return of the Grievous Angel," Gram Parsons

Won't you scratch my itch, sweet Annie Rich?

17. "Fist City," Loretta Lynn

Far from a mere song about a cat fight, this is an invitation to a flat ass beat down. Stay away from Loretta's man!

18. "In Spite of Ourselves" John Prine & Iris Dement

19. "All I Want Is You," The Moldy Peaches

You know this from the opening of Juno.

20. "Big Red Balloon," Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra

21. "Come Pick Me Up," Ryan Adams

I used to think this guy was a bit of a joke. However, I have took the time to listen to his music and it is quite good. This is probably my favorite.

22. "I Am Weary, Let Me Rest" The Cox Family

This is on the O Brother Where Art Thou? sountrack

23. "One More Cup of Coffee," Bob Dylan

24. "Let Him Fly," Patty Griffin

The Dixie Chicks do a cover of this song.
