• Uriah Heep, Feldkirchen, Austria, 25.8.2007

    27 aug 2007, 01:06

This is a short review of stage performance by one of my favourite groups - Uriah Heep (well, you know one of those last true survivors from golden age of rock music). Short 'cause it's only warm up for much longer and intigrate report which will be written in Slovenian language on our great rockline.info site. I apologise for any of mistakes I've made because this is only a quick and rough retrospective of what has happened on this magic night.

Anyone who knows me has in mind that Uriah Heep are more than just an ordinary (art) rock band for me. I'm in touch with their music for about eight years now and my life was never the same again. Since then I've collected every single record they've released on CD (in future I want to collect all of their best albums on vinyls) and' ve seen them four times before that night (two times indoor in Münich, at Wiesen festival and at St. Polten's Lovely Days festival). Anyone who's seen Uriah Heep in last twenty years knows that they're still a wonderful band even without singer David Byron and keyboardist/singer/guitarist Ken Hensley, both of whom were cruical for their early success and were writers of their best songs. Heep were inseparable collective since 1987 up to this year when their long time drummer Lee »The Bear« Kerslake (due to illness) call it a day. Much younger Russel Gilbrook took over the drum stoll and backvocals. I was very sceptical about this replacement but since then, as I've watched Russell performing with his powerful approach on drums, I think he is an amazing drummer who brings much needed youthful energy to this not so young band. Well, the four main guys – guitarist Mick Box (the only original member and holder of Heep flame), bass guitarist Trevor Bolder (one of the best bassists in history of rock music since he played in David Bowie's band Spiders From Mars), keyboardist Phil Lanzon (the best replacement they could find for Hensley and verstaile keyboardist/singer as well) and finally, the amazing singer Bernie Shaw (who is in my opinion »just« third best singer in Heep history after Byron and John Lawton but anyway criminaly overlooked). Well, this is indeed a band, whon can't dissappoint their fans and ayntime they perform live (even if there are technical problems or with weather (as it was the case on this night)), it is an event you can't simply forget.

After I almost gave my hope to see them for the second time in this year (the price for the ticket was exceptionaly expensive), their managment gave me green light for acredditation and so we went to Feldkirchen, the place of the concert. We've arrived about two hours before Heepsters took stage. After two forgetable and boring local acts which played some kind of power blues. One of their singers looked like a valrus and we had many jokes on their »domestic« look but they gave their fans for what they come for.

Finally, at about 21:00, everything was ready for Uriah Heep to take stage. Almost at the time when they arrived with »So Tired« (again they had the same set list as last time; they should change it anytime soon cause I want the factor of surprise and hear some songs they haven't perform for a long time) it started to rain. This didn't stop crowd to welcome band with huge cheers. The show was mixed from old and new stuff. »Cry Freedom« is still one of my favourite songs form Bernie's era and he puts extra energy on it. Then they went onward with »Fallin' In Love«. It's always great to hear songs from Lawton's era and this time it was no exception. »Words In The Distance« is also one of my favourite songs from the »modern« period. The rain didn't destroy the good ambient and Bernie took every moment to force crowd singing some of the songs and vocal harmonies. »Stealin'« is still one of fan favourites and one of Byron's songs which were made for Bernie's voice. »Between Two Worlds« also pleased the crowd with poweful performance from the whole band. Then Mick took his acoustic guitar and went with first chords of »The Wizard«. Oh, my…words can't describe this feeling! I'm in love with this wonderful song since I heard it for the first time. Of, course I've sing it from the beginning to the end as did most of the crowd. More highlights followed. »Sunrise« was one of them, a very powerful song indeed, Bernie put all of his heart in singing and I stood there with open mouth watching him. »Gypsy« from their very first album followed and brought wild response from the older fans. This is one of Mick's greatest moments and he fully displayed his bag of wonderful solos. We had opportunity to hear enlarged version of »Look At Yourself« with longer instrumental part and great duels between Mick, Trevor Bolder and Gilbrook. After that came the highlight of the regular part in shape of »July Morning«. This was perhaps Phil Lanzon's crowning moment in the whole night. He showed excellent performance by playing hammond and mini moog parts with great passion. Of course he wasn't alone as other memebers also performed this great epic extremly well.

After that, the first part of the performance was over. They've returned with »Bird Of Prey«, a song in more hard rocking/metal vein, a good choice to wake up again some of those sleepy persons from the crowd. They finished with two of their best known songs, »Easy Livin'« and »Lady In Black«, which was anything but surprise. During performance of »Easy Livin'«, the lightning burnt the main cable, so the crowd had to finish the song to the end with onyl rhythm in the backup. Hopefuly, they fixed the problem and finished »Lady In Black« with eruption and long cheers from the crowd. Mick Box was not so daring as usually, he threw less picks and only on one side. My friend was very pissed off because of that, although she shared my opinion that it was another wonderful performance form Heepsters. I must also say that there were only about 500 people on the squarre-such a shame (I'm sure that if the price of the ticket was cheaper it would've been very different)! Those facts and bad weather aside, it was indeed a magic night once more from one of the last true surviving magicians of rock music.

  • Favourite guitarists

    8 sep 2006, 19:14

Those are some of prog/classic rock guitarists that I, as occasional guitar player, respect the most:

1.) Robert Fripp (King Crimson, solo) - if there is emphasis on invention, variability and musical discipline then Bob is easily the greatest and most exciting guitar player in rock history. Not only a phenomenal guitarist but also a decent musician and leader of the geatest rock band ever, IMHO of course. Yes, he may be sometimes eccentric as person but I share most of his views on life or people's behavior at concerts (such as, for example; smoking, drinking, uncontrolably screaming and other unhealthy habits).

2.) Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis, ex-GTR, solo) - long ago known as enigmatic bearded guitarist for classical formation of Genesis. But I think that he realy started to show his full potential as highly creative musician when he began solo career. Afterwards he made some of the best albums in symphonic prog. A maestro of numerous guitar technics like finger tapping or pickering he is great persona as well.

3.) Steve Howe(Yes, Asia, ex-GTR, ex-Tomorrow, solo) - mr. Owl just can't live without guitar. If you would pull it from his hands he would certainly cry as a small child. But beside his often egocentric behavior he IMHO represents the most complete guitarist in prog rock history. Howe's compositions as a solo artist may differ in quality and never achieve those hights he made with Yes but nevertheless he also made plenty of colorful and touching music on his own. His playing owe a lot to appalachian and jazz music (one of his heroes being Chet Atkins) though.

4.) Andrew Latimer (Camel) - very underrated guitarist and musician (singer and flautist) IMHO. His playing is so subtle. He may be just the most subtle guitarist in rock and this is what makes Camel's music so special. I owe many of my inspirations when I play guitar to his work.

5.) David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - his style of playing is much similar to those of Latimer (or vice versa) but with more use of steel pedal on some songs. As singer he might be just a slightly better (more variable voice in high registers). I put him behind Latimer just for the simple fact that I think he is little overpraised as a solo musician. Though he will always stay as one of the greatest guitar heroes in history of rock music.

6.) Steve Rothery (Marillion) - well, you wouldn't find more subtle guitarist in neo-prog/modern prog than Steve. I just wonder why he never tested himself more as a solo musician. His The Wishing Tree project was just a disappointment, yet another copy of crapy Blackmore's Night IMHO.

7.) Frank Zappa - there isn't anything that can be added and wasn't said before about one of the greatest musicians and composers of the 20. century. But many people forget that beside great singer, componist, humorist and social rebel, Zappa was also amazing guitarist. Just ask Steve Vai.

8.) Anthony Phillips (ex-Genesis, solo) - for most prog fans he may be forever remembered only as original Genesis guitarist and the pathgiver to mr. Hackett. But the truth is that over the years, Ant made some decent solo works that will forever stand the test of time as masterpieces of moving, eclectic, pastoral and ambient music.

9.) Martin Barre (Jethro Tull, solo) - often reserved on stage and as persona behind Ian's antics, Martin easily stays forgotten when people name their fave guitar players. But the fact is that without him Ian would never brought Jethro Tull in 21. century.

10.) Alex Lifeson (Rush) - always standout with inventive and fresh ideas. Often with great combination of subtle and punchy approach to his playing. He is not only one of the three headed engine that is Rush (they also have one of the best drummers in rock history as well) but also one of the most influental guitarists in modern prog rock music. I wish I would see him one day live (and his amazing band as well, of course).

11.) Allan Holdsworth (ex-Soft Machine, ex-UK, solo) - IMHO recognised as one of the best jazz rock guitarists. I haven't heard much of his other stuff beside UK and Soft Machine though.

12.) Ritchie Blackmore (ex-Deep Purple, ex-Rainbow, Blackmore's Night) - man in black may be onyl a shadow of fomer self in recent years as some kind of troubador for his beloved Candice in Blackmore's Night but he will be forever remembered as one of the greatest, most inovative and influental guitarists in rock history (I am sure there is no single guitar player that hasn't learn how to play the main riff of "Smoke On the Water" when he began to play guitar for the first time). Still without a true reward for his achievements.

13.) John Mitchell (Arena, Kino, It Bites, Frost, The Urbane) - well, it seems that he is almost in every band or project today (lately he became new member of newly reformed It Bites). Certainly the most asked guitarist in "modern" prog rock. I didn't knew much about him (beside his work on Arena albums) before I saw him playing live with Arena one year ago. I didn't imagine he was that good. But after all I should knew that with his arrival Arena got one level higher by making masterpiece that's "The Visitor". Of "modern" prog guitarists he's certainly my favourite.

14.) Mick Box (Uriah Heep)- not only a great guitar player and musician that co-wrote some of the most remarkable tracks in rock history but also great person and major driving force behind phenomenon that is Uriah Heep. Always light hearted, he may also possess the most spiritual vibe behind his playing of those mentioned. I call him "yogi" Mick.

15.) Ian Crichton (Saga) - many forget him when they think about their fave guitarists (and I may not wonder considering how little recognition Saga gets today). I think he truely deserves more recognition as guitar player. After all I hear much of his legacy in works of modern neo-prog guitarists. Asia would've never asked for his services in the past (on "Aura" album) if he wasn't one of the top guitar players in art rock.

Good new AOR-melodic rock band from Germany with former Helloween singer Michael Kiske and members of Pink Cream 69 and Vanden Plas took me by surprise. One of the best releases and new projects of the last year!
