Wed 12 Sep – Wolf Parade, Holy Fuck, lemonade

i missed lemonade. holy fuck had a couple of cool numbers but for the most part i felt like i was watching a couple of stoned boys making earcandy music in their basement. i know that sounds harsh but the music was clunky and muddled a little too often for it to be blissful and trancy. give them time. i think they might have potential.

wolf parade were freakin awesome. i haven't been the hugest fan of their recordings. i really like spencer krug's work and am a bigger fan of sunset rubdown. wolf parade had previously struck me as a more radio friendly and trendy sounding version of specer's other work. that may be true, but these songs make for great live performances. there was a massive current of energy coming off the stage, with the audience jumping and dancing with the beat. krug's keyboards and thompson's drums really hold the band together but its all the parts combined that give the band their unique sound. boeckner's reverbed distorted guitars give the songs an edge while bakara's keyboards swirl the psychidelia around. both boeckner and krug have really unique vocals and they sounded great on stage. i think they pretty much played most of their songs off wolf parade ep and apologies to the queen mary but i can't keep their songs straight enough to say exactly which they played. i do know that they said that a handful of the songs they were playing were written recently, presumably for a new album. i really liked a bunch of these new tracks so i'm certainly going to order it from insound when it becomes available. i have to say, usually after listening to a band a bunch before a show and then seeing them live makes me want to take a break from them but i had the opposite reaction with wolf parade and now i can't stop listening to them. whatever they do, it works.
