Thu 17 Apr – Estelle, John Legend
Several friends and I attended the show at Sugar Hill in Atlanta and I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised.
John Legend arrived on stage first to present Estelle, the first artist from his Home School Records label, to a large crowd of attendees all eagerly awaiting Estelle's live performance. The excitement from the crowd could be felt as some fans cheered in anticipation.
As he left the stage, Estelle took the stage looking the part of an already established platinum selling music artist wearing a stylish, fitted black dress with her hair and make-up looking flawless. She even displayed her awesome personality by joking with the crowd about her experiences with less-than-desirable ex-boyfriends and explained how many of her songs were about past relationships.
She then went on to command the stage with an undeniable presence, peforming songs from her soon-to-be-released album Shine, such as, "Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)" and "Substitute Love." She also performed two duets with the amazingly talented and good looking John Legend. They both looked and sounded great together. The subtle, upscale setting of the Sugar Hill club contributed a touch of elegance and intimacy to the performance.
The show was roughly about an hour long with Estelle closing the show with an upbeat perfomance of her international hit song "American Boy", minus the Kanye West feature, of course.
My friends and I left the show feeling quite satisfied, anticipating the release of her new album.
I highly recommend future shows headlining Estelle (and John Legend for that matter) to anyone who likes the sultry sound of Lauryn Hill or Erykah Badu. I promise you will not be disappointed, as Estelle is like of breath of fresh air to the Hip-Hop and R&B genres.
