Hey Brando! I'm good, man. Just working, living, enjoying the sunshine of late and of course, listening to much music. I'm currently stuck on a lost album from 1995 by a quintet named Stepchild. They sound like a cross between The Pharcyde and Heatwave. Or a more hip hop informed version of bands like The Blackbyrds, Pleasure and Breakwater. I think you'd like them.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the essay and thanks for the support. Donna is so slept on, it kind of pisses me off. I love how people try to just niche her in one box & act like she was wrecking shop in the music department. Ah well, I plan to rectify that revisionism before I leave this earth, lol.

hey brando, no probs. i love soul music as well as hiphop, blues, and 70s rnb and disco. sometimes i wish i knew more of the artists, so it's kind of cool i came across your page, because it gives me an insight into the artists you're playing :):) here's a little something for you. I LOVE THIS BEAT, i love the way it was sampled in 'mind playing tricks' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdgRMFlxTJk and another little classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pomOk1882iI ~ feel free to link me some funk/soul etc, it'll be appreciated. enjoy your weekend

Imma be real with you, I too thought that Disco was basically Funk for white people, lol. But I can see that disco has its roots in funk. True say about hip hop and disco though, the earliest hip hop songs was essentially rapping over disco beats so I can dig some of it. 70s funk is the absolute best though. IMO Funk and soul were at their peaks during that decade. Whaaat, Shuggie was on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon?! He’s been a recluse for decades, it must be kinda odd getting back into performing. I take it you’ll be copping the Inspiration Information reissue too? I barely have any soul/funk albums on CD, I should get to fixing that. There’s my family’s vinyl collection and of course music sounds better on wax…but a few albums for myself would be cool.

Twitter, etc.. has exposed so many celebrities for the worst. Some of these artists actions make it so hard for you to focus on the music. I do like when celebrities try to be very private lol.

Get Down On It is a fun, funk-pop song, I like it. But then K&TG just got way too poppy/disco for my liking, but that is when they were most successful so I understand why they went that route. I just have this massive dislike for most disco since I see it as a dilution of Funk music. Maybe there’s some good Disco that I’m missing out on, who knows. Do you prefer EWF to K&TG? I know what you mean, man. I’m so grateful my family exposed to me to the classics. They really are classics, too. You have albums that were released 40 years ago, still sounding fresh and relevant to this day. I can’t see many albums released now, having the same impact in years to come. Oh word? Inspiration Info is so chill, love that album. About time they reissued it. Isn’t Shuggie touring also? Never thought I would see the day, lol.

I was at my breaking point with KTT recently, I post in one section now. I wish there were more 20 and up members on there. Many complain about the org becoming a gossip site but sadly that is the culture we are part of. It's hard to talk about people music without their personal life involve.

Thanks, I'll start with Graham's debut. I've heard of that K&TG album, haven't listened to it yet. Do you prefer their earlier or late more commercialized material? I really like their early raw funk albums. I don't own too may classic soul/funk albums, but I should change that. My parents have a great vinyl collection though.

I did recall you recommending Graham Central Station but I forgot which specific albums you mentioned...I did go through a Funk kick recently, and discovered Kool & The Gang's earlier material. SO much better than I anticipated. Which GCS record do you suggest I start with?

It's cool, man. I know the feeling. Sometimes the responsibilities of the outside world can put everything else on pause. Ha, I remember when Emancipation was selling for $30+. Sam Goody used to sell the cassette edition for the same price as the 3 CD set. (I don't believe it was ever pressed on vinyl.) So, to cop it for $28 less than it's initial retail in pristine condition was the ultimate steal. White Mansion, Summer In the City and Sleep Around were the only tracks that left an impression on first listen. I couldn't help but to notice how conventional the production was. It really felt like a regular mid '90s R&B album that happened to be sung by Prince. I will say that lyrically, he was at his most personal on a lot of the songs. The second disc is supposed to dedicated to then-wife Mayte Garcia. I will revisit Emancipation in all of its 3 hour glory soon and I'll pay closer attention to those tracks you noted.

I use to take photos for fun with my digital camera. Some were even used by my campus publication. Would you say that a Nikkon D40 is the best choice for a budding photographer?

What's good man. Long time indeed. How's college going? I've been alright, same old really. Still a huge Prince fan I see, lol.

Long time, no talk. How are you? I had to shout at you because I recently purchased a pristine copy of Prince's Emancipation for $3 at a used record store that I frequent. Upon first listen earlier today, I was not impressed. Which cuts should I revisit? Also, I just checked out your Tumblr. Very nice pictures. What kind of camera do you shoot them with?
