  • King Khan & The Shrines Live @ Starlite Room May20/09

    22 maj 2009, 01:08

Wed 20 May – King Khan And The Shrines, Mark Sultan

King Khan & The Shrines put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. I know I say that every time I attend a show but this time, I mean it. I mean whats there not to like. You’ve got King Khan himself who seems to channel James Brown, the cheerleader who danced her heart out for the entire show spraying glitter over the dancing crowd every couple of minutes and the amazing backing band including the amazing brass section and a percussionist who formerly played for Curtis Mayfield and Stevie Wonder.

The whole show was a spectacle and I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. I was always guessing as to what King Khan will do next. He comes to the stage adorned in a leopard skin suit along with a peacock feathered headpiece and at the end of the show once everything was said and done, King Khan was seen shirtless wearing a golden cape and what looked like a Darth Vader mask

At one point, King Khan asked the crowd if they were in to gospel music and proclaimed that it was time for some gospel revival music but not just any gospel music. Obviously since this was a King Khan show , it would be “erotic gospel music”. I was curious as to what that would entail and I was not let down. With the help of his backing band, King Khan started talking about what could be described as an experience of “live rebirth” along with all the gory details but it was hilarious. He would always dedicate a song to a certain demographic among the crowd. He started the infectious track “I wanna be a Girl” by dedicating it to all the “transvestites, faggots and to all the people who make this world a fun place to live in”. He called out to all the unemployed people while singing “Welfare Bread” and to all the freaks before belting out their most popular song “Land of the Freak”. At one point, a drunk fan gets up on stage and start dancing with King Khan which was hilarious. I was able to capture that on video.

An hour and half went by way too fast and the show was over. If you get a chance to see them live, do not miss it.

  • Bollywood Funk - Volume 1

    17 maj 2009, 20:41

I was planning on doing this for a while but due to wordpress temporarily shutting me down, I wasn’t motivated enough to finish it. My blog has been pretty stagnant for the last couple of weeks for exactly that same reason but fuck it, WordPress can shut me down if it wants to.

Back to the topic, this is more like a compilation than a mix of some of my favorite Bollywood(I hate that term) from the yesteryear. It features music from Kalyanji-Anandji, R.D Burman and the always funky Bappi Lahiri. This is by no means a comprehensive mix since I tried to keep it around the hour mark and there are a lot of good tracks that are missing here but perhaps I will include them in Volume 2. If you liked Bombay The Hard Way Vol 1 & 2 that I posted a while ago, you will definitely dig this compilation. Some of the tracks are not in the best quality since they come from vinyl rips but I find that when it comes to vintage music, I don’t mind some irregularities or hisses since it adds some sort of character to the music.

  • Music

    16 mar 2009, 23:16

Rob: What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

That quote from High Fidelity has got me thinking. I only gravitated towards "the thousands, thousands of songs" and not the rest because I have never personally dealt with heartbreak or rejection. Its interesting to me that there is so much music out there. I have about 20,000 tracks scrobbled on my lasfm but I have barely scratched the surface. There is just so much music out there and I am afraid that I might not be able to listen to most of it. I wonder if it can be classified as a phobia. I do realize that its unreasonable but maybe its not.
  • A.R. Rahman Mixtape

    3 mar 2009, 02:35

Everyone seems to be loving the Slumdog Millionaire OST these days and I am one of them. I am happy that A.R. Rahman finally recieved some recognition for his work in the form of an Oscar, he totally deserves it. However, I don't think Slumdog Millionaire is his best work but it seems to be gaining a lot of recognition due to Slumdog Millionaire which is a good thing. It will only lead people to check out his older work since he has composed some incredible music for Bollywood films. This is where I step in, I have been a huge A.R Rahman since my childhood and I have decided to make a mixtape for people who are perhaps not familiar with him. I am sure that people who know his work might complain that I have left out some key tracks from his discography and I am sure I have but its hard to pick songs from such an incredible discography at the same time trying to keep the mixtape around an hour mark. The track list contains the name of the tracks and the corresponding movies they were a part of.

    2. Chaiyya Chaiyya - Dil Se
    3. Ae Ajnabi - Dil Se
