These are the songs I listed to the most in 2008. Most of them were released in the past couple of years, although a couple are from the 1990's. In most cases I just started listening to them in the past year or so. If you;ve never heard of any of these artists, chances are I discovered them through the recommendation system on last.fm. Here is a preview:

Queen of Hearts by Romantica (From my most listened to album of the year, America. I discovered this one on eMusic.com)

The Great State of Misery by Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys (This is another one from eMusic.com. It's good old Western Swing)

For the Turnstiles by The Be Good Tanyas (A Neil Young song)

Dublin Blues by Guy Clark (From a concert with Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt in Austin, TX)

Rye Whiskey by Blue Mountain (This is another one from eMusic.com.)

Welfare Music by The Bottle Rockets (The pride of Festus, MO. This is another one from eMusic.com.)

Turpentine by Brandi Carlile (Tina heard her on NPR and called me)

Starry Crown by the Carolina Chocolate Drops (We drove to Black Mountain to see them in concert. They are from Durham, NC. Three young black folks playing old-time string music. This is another one from eMusic.com.)

Wide River to Cross by Buddy Miller (Buddy Miller was named artist of the Decade in the last edition ever printed of No Depression Magazine. This is another one from eMusic.com.)

Dusty Boxcar Wall by Eilen Jewell (This is another one from eMusic.com.)

Little Black Train by Freakwater (Everybody's got to ride the little black train and it ain't gonna bring you back. eMusic.com)

Gospel Plow by Hackensaw Boys ( A classic - guess where I got it?)
Lone Pine Hill by Justin Townes Earle(Steve Earle's son - eMusic.com)

I Drink by Mary Gauthier (Recommended by Mr. Bob Dylan himself)

Stacker Lee by Uncle Earl ( A classic - guess where I got it?)
Coalminer by Uncle Tupelo (From the album that started the Alt.Country movement)

Marie by Willie Nelson (The saddest song I ever heard)

Coolness. I've only heard of about a quarter of these (and they're all good) so I'm gonna have to check out some more (and use up those eMusic credits!) Thanks.

Very interesting! How did you compile the list - do you have actual statistics, or have you put it together by memory?

I used an iTunes Smart playlist Songs added AFTER 1/1/2008 and played MORE THAN 25 times. I had to be a bit more liberal to get a couple of them on the list, but you get the idea.

So, you were a wee bit flexible :) So was I, but only a leeeetle. I was actually a bit surprised by my own list, since I consider myself rather eclectic - but that sure doesn't show in my list..I have been a bit worried lately, that my collection is growing so large that my real taste might be getting diluted. But it isn't, at all! Btw, I was very happy by your comment to my list, even though it was jokingly said. You know, I actually search for "Alt Women", that is, women with an attitude - be it Country, Folk, Jazz - whatever. I have two grown daughters -29 and 32 - and they're both *rather* strongwilled (and I love them for it). So, I try to keep up with them in any which way I can. Sometimes, they think I'm silly, but at other times we get along remarkably well. I'm sure the music is helping me!
