Here's Nirvana. Look at them. Dave, thinking about writing songs with videos loosely based on Mentos and 70's hospital dramas; Krist, thinking about growing his beard some more; Kurt, thinking about how much he hates life. Perfect grunge band? Not really, no.
But they are at the top of my charts - and by a long way too. So here: a Top 10 list of Nirvana songs which I feel somewhat qualified to comment on. Next up will be The Jimi Hendrix Experience…I think. Whatever.
10: Endless, Nameless
Sure, it might have scared the shit out of you when you first heard it (a couple of years after Something In The Way ends) but you do have to admit, for what just sounds like a clusterfuck of noise, it does have a nice rhythm to it. Listen to it all the way through, then listen to it again! You can change your pants afterwards.
9: Pennyroyal Tea
The studio version. Sorry guys, I just don't feel the same 'pain' and 'emotion' that you've attached to the Unplugged version - I only cringe when Kurt nearly stops halfway through. The In Utero Pennyroyal Tea never stops until the very end. Also, it's hard and heavy, just like grunge should be.
8: Breed
Hell yes! This was a perfect choice to kick off the Reading Festival - incredible power and incredible force, rolled into one incredible package. I wish I wasn't just a little baby when Nirvana was around - this would have been so good to see live in concert. I would've stagedived at least 25 times. Srsly.
7: Sliver
Kick-ass bass. Kick-ass lyrics. Need I say more?
6: I Hate Myself and Want to Die
Very nice title, indeed. It's got loads of feedback, which is really what grunge is all about! Hot buttsecks all the way. I had this in my head for about 5 weeks without knowing what song it was - that really annoyed me. But when I found out it was this, I was a very happy little man. Played it on a constant loop and annoyed the neighbours, etc.
5: Come As You Are
I have to admit that this song does seem a tad over-produced (really much like the entire Nevermind album), but it's just too catchy to hate. Once you've heard that guitar riff, the song never leaves your head. Never.
4: All Apologies
Once again, I'm not talking about the Unplugged version…I'm talking about the studio version! And I guess you would know why: hard, heavy, etc. Yes, I know that I'm a douchebag for not 'appreciating' the Unplugged album like everyone should.
3: Scentless Apprentice
The drumming just does it all. Bravo, Mr. Grohl.
2: Radio Friendly Unit Shifter
Epic, x10. I can't stress enough just how awesome this song is. Everything about it feels like massive masturbation: the feedback, the chorus, the verses and the ever-lasting feeling of euphoria that doesn't disappear until after your mutated flipper babies graduate from college. Just…phenomenal.
And last of all…
1: Drain You
…obviously.
