Tonight is the final three, with three songs apiece. With the pressure on, let's see how each of them do with such a heavy load.
- David Archuleta singing And So It Goes - When I heard that this was Paula's choice, I imagined her listening to the Ballads channel on XM, and just randomly picking it out of desperation. Fast forward to tonight, and I tip my hat to her. Great song choice, and really good performance. I don't think it was stellar, but his voice sounded great with that arrangement.
- Syesha Mercado singing If I Ain't Got You - Out of all of the judges' picks over the years, this has to be the second best pick for an artist, behind Somewhere Over the Rainbow for Katherine McPhee. That was a terrific performance, and she really didn't oversing it as she has done before. On total impact, I think she has a slight edge so far.
- David Cook singing The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - I'm gonna be honest here…he started out a little bit shaky, but that ending was just brilliant. The great thing about Cook is that he seems to have a more diverse taste in music than "the rocker" title gives him credit for.
Round 1 - You know what? I'm giving it to Syesha. Who woulda thought?
- David A singing With You - Okay…I think the missing father's influence is now showing. I'll agree that it was a brave choice, and he had some strong vocals in spots, but he wasn't sure of himself, practically lost the lyrics at one point (and got yet ANOTHER pass on that), and it really didn't fit him. This is definitely the wrong point in the season to lose that momentum, and with Syesha coming on strong, this could be the Top 4 shocker one week late. Let's see how the final round goes.
- Syesha singing Fever - First off, I really liked the ending, and the performance as a whole was really good. Having said that, it just didn't have the impact that the first song had. And was that chair even necessary? I think she may have lost all of the momentum that she picked up in round one.
- David C singing Dare You To Move - I originally had thought he would do The World I Know, but maybe they had a problem getting clearance for the track. This should have been a tour de force, but Paula was on point. There just wasn't enough time to really get cooking (no pun intended), but it was a good performance for what he had to work with.
Round 2 - Eh. Do I have to pick? I'll give it to Cook by a nudge.
- David A singing Longer - Wow…what a weird choice of song for a 17-year-old. What were the producers thinking? Now, if you just ignore the lyrics and listen to the melody, I think he did alright, but I thought it went a little pitchy towards the end. It was good, but not great.
- Syesha singing Hit Me Up - I had to look the song up to see who sang it, and saw that it was from "Happy Feet". That's a bad sign. The producers are really 0 for 2 tonight, and the contestants are working with what they've been given. Really, I thought it was a bit of a mess.
- David C singing I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - I heard Ryan say the song choice for David, and I said out loud "the producers just gave this to Cook". While the arrangement was just horrible, David sang past it and did a good job.
Round 3 - No question…definitely to Cook.
Okay…I know this is going to be a shock, but I predict a David Squared finale. Syesha started off strong, but the fan base just isn't there. Can she pull it out one more time? Methinks not.
