It was present, but I was referring to their material since their reunion, in which the lyrics have been far more subtle and indirect for the most part. I see what you mean, and agree that it is wrong to view "grunge" as an individual musical style, when sonically the bands identified as such sound so different. It was a dumbed-down term that the media/record labels could use to group all the bands together and market them, nothing more. As you may have noticed, I also listen to those bands from time to time, I still strive to see them live (Mudhoney and Soundgarden so far this year, maybe the Melvins later, although they fall into the genres that now have become a key part of my taste), and I still feel some sort of attachment to what they've created. My emotions have progressed, however, and not even my beloved AIC can match how I feel sometimes. They are always there for me, however, and that is comforting. So anyways, give me a new band to explore!

P.S. How could I not like Gummo? It was remarkably bleak, absurd, unexpected, original, and had a killer soundtrack and some very nice, disturbing visuals. It was a film that never really went anywhere or stuck on one topic for too long, but instead provided a broad, highly exaggerated view on life in some of the more stagnant, directionless towns that dot the south and Midwest. To be honest, it reminded me of my father's family and the way they exist, so very much out of touch with reality.

a bit more experimentation into a sort of trippier direction. My favorite songs are from their older material, but this record is quite solid from start to finish, and seems to lack some of the filler that occasionally popped up in the past.

I feel the same, I know I must give the album more listening time to develop a proper opinion of it, but I can't motivate myself to do so, not when I am so captivated by artists like Summoning and Swans. The songs you listed were for the most part the ones I found myself enjoying, and I was surprised (pleasantly) to hear them criticizing religion in the title track, given how their recent lyrics have been sort of vague and predictable. I'm happy for them, I've glad they've had a fairly successful comeback, and I hope things continue to go well even if the music they produce nowadays isn't as stunning as what they once were capable of. You bring up an interesting point though, and I am curious, has discovering other genres of music that you have been able to so greatly enjoy impacted your opinion of AIC's earlier material? As for the new QOTSA, it continues to be mellower than their older material, like Era Vulgaris, but it features high quality songwriting, stronger vocals from Josh,

It wasn't terrible by any means, but very little stood out. They've gone in a kind of sludgy direction, which is cool in concept but ultimately hasn't been executed as well as I would have liked. There were some great guitar riffs, and Jerry had better vocal moments than he's had for a while, but they never changed pace and as a result it didn't go by very smoothly. I don't know, maybe I am being too harsh, but they do happen to be my favourite band obviously so I am entitled to hold them to ridiculous expectations! An album that I did find myself enjoying greatly would be the new Queens of the Stone Age record. I've only listened a few times, but I think it might be one of their most solid releases.

Om mig

Chainshead.
The stuff I enjoy in music:
folk elements, melancholic/depressing approach, philosophical lyrics, strong context.
