CAKE concert 5/14/11

Went to go see CAKE in concert, and it was amazing. I had to wait in line for 90 minutes in freezing rain, but it was worth it as I got first row. John McCrea was literally right in front of me, so close that I nearly touched his vibraslap (I swear that's not a euphemism).

When they opened with "Arco Arena", I nearly pissed myself. It's one of my favorites of theirs, even though there isn't any words; and you all know how much I love a good lyric. I'm not one for instrumentals, but that one is just brilliant. I was embarrassed because whenever John McCrea looked in my direction, I always was staring at Vince DiFiore, so I felt the need to turn my head and look at John.

They played a bunch of songs I didn't know, but it was amazing when they played "Sheep Go To Heaven" and "Stickshifts and Safetybelts", because those were the two songs that I knew and nobody else seemed to. But then again I was given some weird looks when I sang a wrong lyric to "Never There".

John McCrea was edging the audience to sing the harmony to "Satan is My Motor", and he was saying something that stuck with me. He was saying, "I know all of you out there have a dark side, and this is your chance to let it speak. With your voice, tell everyone. Here's your chance to scream it, in this dimly-lit room with people you don't even know, just tell them and me everything. The worst of people are the ones that don't admit they have a dark side, those are the crazy ones. Now's your chance."

And I felt it, I felt everything release. That's what made it such a great experience.
