Yeah, I totally understand about the puerile tendencies and toilet humor, and it's part of the reason why I prefer the non-vocal instrumental tracks. Joe's Garage is full of sex jokes and general silliness, but I think if you ignore the lyrical content and focus solely on the instrumentation and textures, there's a lot to enjoy. I don't know if you've listened to Lumpy Gravy or not, but I think you should give it a listen. From your stats on here it looks like you're really into psychedelic music, and Lumpy Gravy is probably Zappa's most psychedelic work (well technically it's experimental musique concrete, but I feel there's a psychedelic or at least generally "weird" vibe going on in the music). As for Beefheart, I'm not familiar with him apart from his vocal role in "Willie The Pimp". Do you have any recommendations on where to start if I want to get into his solo work?

The great thing about all this is that I know I'm just scratching the surface...Zappa really does have an immense discography! What are your favorite tracks/albums?

Hey John! I mostly prefer Zappa's purely instrumental work -- Lumpy Gravy, Civilization Phase III, Sleep Dirt, and Hot Rats. Lumpy Gravy and Civilization both give off otherworldly vibes when I listen to them, and I especially like Civilization since it showcases Zappa's craziness but in the sphere of electronic music...plus the fact that he made the album at a time so close to his death. Sleep Dirt was the first Zappa album I ever listened to -- right when I heard the opening track, "Filthy Habits", I knew I was in for a treat. And Hot Rats is just pure ecstasy, really catchy stuff and I can understand why it's most people's "gateway" to Zappa. As for stuff with vocals, I really like Joe's Garage -- the idea behind it seems so ahead of its time, the tracks flow into each other really well, and the album has a really diverse range of music packed into it. And Freak Out! is nice when I want to just hear some 60s rock.

So I've been listening to some tracks by Highway17 -- very nice textures! It reminds me a bit of Tim Hecker in that there are a lot of strong "otherworldly" vibes in the tracks, though some moments also have a video-game like chiptune feel. Anyway, tomorrow I'm heading out to Indiana to visit the campus of Indiana University and talk with the professors about Ph.D-related stuff -- I'll be there till the 11th. So I won't be fooling around on last.fm too much during that time if at all, since I'll be pretty busy!

8 years in Japan? Wow! You must have really gotten to know Japanese culture pretty well (though I've heard that it's still very difficult for a foreigner to become an 'insider' in Japanese society, for he will always be seen as a gaijin). I haven't heard that much Japanese music -- basically just themes from anime that I used to watch. Have you heard of Noriko Sakai? She was my go-to artist if I wanted to listen to incredibly happy (almost over-the-top) music from the '80s and '90s. Oh yes, Russian rock has a very tumultuous history! Some great groups came out of it, though -- DDT and Viktor Tsoi are legends in Russia. I'm curious about the ambient though -- looking back, I don't think I've ever listened to any ambient music from Russia!

The community aspect of that site is kind of odd because you can't interact with/message any of the other members or see what they're writing (it's meant to be more of a private thing and not a public blog). Nevertheless, I find that being in a friendly competition with other members each month is a good way to stay motivated. Thanks -- yeah, teaching is definitely not the most lucrative career option, but if I can eventually get tenure at a university (high hopes!) I will be in a good position. I've been to Russia twice for studies - first in St. Petersburg, then in Irkutsk. I also was in Kazakhstan for a summer in 2008. I've noticed from listening to your radio that you're fond of music from around the world -- have you delved into the world of Russian music much? There was a period of time when I almost exclusively listened to Russian music (I updated my profile with a little "timeline" of my listening history.)

Oh, cool! Well unfortunately it's no longer a secret, since it's now on my last.fm wall and anyone who stops by my page will know a little bit more about you. :-P But yeah, when I was in Russia I informally taught English, and I'd like to ultimately teach Russian at the university level (this is why I need my Ph.D, credentials, and all that). I wasn't an English major but I do try to get into writing -- have you heard of 750words.com? It's a site that encourages you to write at least 750 words every day online, and it has a video game-like system of achievements where you get badges and awards based on how long you go without missing a day. (Not everyone needs the achievement system, of course, but for a lot of people it's an additional way to get motivated.)

No problem, John! I write a blog of my own as well, though it's not music-related at all -- it's focused on resources and information about Russian (it was my undergraduate and graduate focus, and I'll be starting my Ph.D in it this fall).

I've noticed the trolls on there too. A lot of them are very thinly veiled trolls. Anyway, it's too bad you aren't writing a music blog anymore, because I would definitely read it!

Yeah, I think for some people it's a pure vanity thing. By the way, what draws you to Yahoo! Answers if I may ask? I used to spend a lot of time on that site and while there are occasionally some good discussions, there's an awful lot of silliness and I found myself getting bored with it pretty quickly.

  • lost_in_last_fm

Yeah, comments like that do show ignorance. I've only recently begun interacting with the actual 'community' of last.fm users, but I've always taken it as a given that if you're on this site, you're here because you want to learn about new kinds of music (even if you only want to expand your taste within a certain field of music). I feel that if you're a hipster you're more concerned with vanity, so much that you'll save your scrobbles only for artists that will make your taste look more interesting to others. Like, the scrobbler would be turned off if you want to listen to Top 40 music, but to boost up one's 'hipster cred', one would leave the scrobbler on with the computer volume muted while putting an "obscure music" playlist on repeat. Kind of like what the gimmick accounts do that have music from one artist playing 24/7, so that they will have 500,000+ scrobbles from one artist and absolutely no scrobbles from anyone else.

I don't think hipsters are disliked because they are discovering new music. Hipsters are disliked because they are very vocal about how they dislike popular mainstream musical acts (or obscure groups that have become more popular/mainstream over time). Often they are more concerned with seeming more superficially "cool" than genuinely enjoying new and different kinds of music. Not all hipsters are the same (just like not all goths, for example, are the same), but there are certain types of fashion popular among hipsters (ironic T-shirts, thick glasses, unusual colors), and people do try to adhere to this fashion and become a hipster (just like some people as teens may have a 'goth phase' or a 'punk phase' without being too deeply immersed in that subculture). Of course, I don't like placing people in categories and I try to be open-minded with everyone, but I feel that there is a definite hipster phenomenon and it is relevant in today's society.

Om mig

About 97% of my plays are hand-picked, on the fly. About 3% are randomly generated. Most plays are from my personal archive of 500,165 tracks.

I guess the common theme running through my listening years is that I like swirly, droning modal playing. I like exotic instrumentation. I like texture.. I like sincerity and devotion in the playing. I like a 4/4 rock beat, or alien beats. I like syncopation. I prefer abstract, impressionistic lyrics over wordy ones unless the writer is a real talent. I like exploration and risk taking. I like music that thumbs its nose at convention. I like music from around the world. I like being exposed to new ideas...

I also have my sentimental, gloopy side which means I play my fair share of schmaltz, too. But I try to limit it so that it doesn't mess up my radio station too much...

Except under the most extreme of circumstances, I don't judge people by the music they like. This is what I like; your results may vary.

All 'friendship' requests accepted, even if I don't like ya personally. This is because I am a firm believer in the 'cross-pollinization' of musical ideas that David Crosby has talked about for 40 years... I like most people tho ;-)

Weird Fact About My Listening Habits I Learned After Joining last.fm

I never knew this about myself, but I have very abnormal listening habits... I guess I should have known, but I'm dense that way sometimes. At 18000 last.fm plays, my #50 artist had 83% as many plays as my #1 artist. My #500 artist has 17% as many plays as my #1 artist. These are freakishly high percentages as it turns out, compare them to your own... ;-) Another weird thing is that my top 50 artists only account for about 8% of my total plays, a freakishly low percentage. I guess I'd describe myself as a radically horizontal listener, rather than a rigidly vertical one, if that makes sense...

On "Hearting" Songs

People have asked me why I "heart" so many songs... Three reasons, really. It makes a better playback of my radio station (unhearted songs usually don't come up often), I really do love, like, or want to hear again the songs that I heart (I usually only play stuff I like, or think I *might* like), and also it serves as a way of 'recommending' stuff to people who check out my play history. If you like the artist, you'll probably like the hearted songs...

Songs left unhearted don't necessarily suck. They just didn't grab me the first time. Some get hearted on subsequent plays, others never get that heart, and some get their hearts removed on re-evaluation. It *might* mean the song sucks, but it also could just mean indifference. Or, it means I dozed off when it was on, and missed it.

If you truly have a need to know my most favorite songs, look for the ones I tagged "Seederman Top Pick"

About tagging

Generally, I tag every artist I play (I didn't do thus for my first 6 months here). I tag them by genre and decade (always), location (often), instrument (usually in the case of a virtuoso), and also have invented some whimsical tags of my own. Feel free to explore my playlist by genre, if so inclined.

About my radio

I'm happy if anyone wants to give my radio a try. Just be forewarned that it is sometimes a bumpy listen, and that a lot of my favorite songs, if not most, are not hosted at last.fm. So it sounds a lot lamer than it should. However, there are a lot of good tracks in there, so if yer looking for new listening ideas, feel free. Comments welcome.

What kind of flower is that?

It is a Datura trumpet, aka Jimson Weed.
