They say imitation is the surest form of flattery and Count Raven nails the Sabbath worship perfectly. Nortt one of the more unknown artists in the realm of extreme metal has put out a catalog of dark, atmospheric, gloom filled metal. Combining heaping piles of black metal along with funeral doom Nortt has made a name for himself in metal-land. Galgenfrist his most recent from 2007 continues in his quest for all that is dark and dead.

Suffocation's 2006 self titled album has to be one of my favorite death metal albums of all time. Love the lyrics, the riffs, the kick ass drumming of Mike Smith, and everything else about it. I also love the change in vocal style by Frank Mullen. Innovators in the genre who have been imitated but rarely duplicated this is what death metal is all about.

As most of you who know me and my taste in metal know that I love England's Cathedral. Their love of all things doom make them one of the premier doom bands who mix in elements of horror movies (their love of the Blind Dead series) and stoner metal. Endtyme is one such album and their last they recorded for Earache back in 2001. Well enough about the album just listen to Cathedral and join the legions of doom fans.

Sodom is one of my favorite bands and one of the best thrash bands around. I do love their early black metal sound and when I heard the original lineup reunited to re-record several songs from The Sign of Evil EP as well as record some songs that never made it on the album I would thrilled. I also believe it was Chris Witchfinder's last recording as he passed away in 2007 from organ failure.

I am a huge fan of all things doom metal and I love the obscure bands that took doom and slowed it down to the snail's pace of funeral doom. Ahab from Germany though relatively new to the scene have made their mark on the genre with their superior nautical themed funeral doom metal. This is more than just your minimalist sound this is fun on atmospheric gloom filled music for those who wish to drown their sorrows (yes pun intended).

Poland has produced some of the best extreme metal bands with the likes of Vader, Decapitated, Yattering, and the mighty Behemoth. Thanks to SludgePunk and his love for this band I have really gotten a new appreciation for less traditional doom metal. CoL's Salvation is probably the album that defines their sound and they play that atmospheric sludge extremely well. This is not stuff you want to drive across country listening to but this is killer stuff nonetheless.

Confessor one of the more technically sounding doom bands around with a very distinct drum sound toiled in obscurity in their first go around releasing the excellent Condemned back in 1991 on Earache. Having taken a break for a decade they returned with 2005's Unraveled. If you looking for another Black Sabbath clone then look somewhere else as this is not your father's doom metal.
