1. Mixtapes - Even On The Worst Nights
Second time at #1 in three years…
2. Bad Credit No Credit - The Whole Buffalo
One of my favorite NYC bands totally knocks it out of the park. This is the least poppy album of the year. Not an easy listen but amazing.
3. No Trigger - Tycoon
An awesome comeback – they were my #1 in 2006!
4. The Smittens - Believe Me
I even like the dude singers!
5. The Menzingers - On The Impossible Past
This band is pretty undeniable.
7. Ke$ha - Warrior
Honestly, this album is probably even better, but I'm too embarrassed to put it higher. So many classics.
8. The Dollyrots - The Dollyrots
Soooo catchy.
9. Regents - Antietam After Party
Believe the hype. Great live set too.
10. Loma Prieta - I.V.
Deserves all the praise it gets. Heavy.
11. Direct Hit/Hold Tight - Split
Pop punk bands make an unbelievable hardcore record.
12. Various - Rebel on the Underground: A Tribte to X-Ray Spex
Some friends of mine put this out, and it is SO GOOD. I mean, not as good as the originals, but nothing will ever be.
13. Sick Fix - Vexed
Brutal female-fronted hardcore. Best of this viciousness since Punch and Deathrats.
14. Troubled Coast - Awake and Empty
Upsetting, in a good way, without being too hard. Could be part of The Wave, musically.
15. Code Orange Kids - Love Is Love//Return To Dust
Nothing will ever top their demo, and it took a while to grow, but it's good. And it's so heavy. I finally "got" it recently – it's basically the soundtrack to the Bascilica in Istanbul.
16. The Vaccines - Come Of Age
On the list two years in a row. Some of the best songs of the year.
17. Screaming Females - Ugly
They seriously cannot go a year without making one of the top releases. They might not churn out 100 releases a year like Mixtapes, but they've never made anything bad.
18. Verse - Bitter Clarity, Uncommon Grace
Almost as great a return as No Trigger…
19. Jimmy Cliff - Rebirth
The best album Tim Armstrong has worked on since Op Ivy.
20. Anna Vogelzang - Canary in a Coal Mine
Just beautiful.
EPs:
1. Blacklisted - So You Are A Magician
This is what they've been aiming for with their grunge experimentation. Copper Fields and Houdini Blues just completely nail it. Merging 90s rock with unbelievable hardcore.
2. Candy Hearts - The Best Ways to Disappear
I knew this band would do something incredible, and now they have. Some of the best pop punk EVER.
3. War on Women - Improvised Weapons
Powerful.
4. Mindtroll - Fancy Boy
Funniest band in Brooklyn, and one of the best.
5. Desperate Living - Demo 2012
So brutal.
6. Regents - Regents
The EP was as good as the LP. Two lists in one year.
7. Standard Fare - WIAIWYA 7"
Pop at its best. So sad they are calling it quits.
8. Shrag - WIAIWYA 7"
More delicious pop. More quitters. More happysadness.
9. The Shivering Brigade - Villains' Demo
Amazing demo from some of my best friends!
10. TinVulva - TinVulva
Riot Grrrl is back!
11. Apocalypse Five and Dime - EP
The jazzier side, but still super catchy
12. Claire's Diary - Girl Next Door
More catchy power pop.
13. Allo Darlin' - WIAIWYA 7"
This 7" collection was such a great investment.
14. A Wilhelm Scream - Boat Builders
Whetting my appetite for 2013! Love this band, but who doesn't?
