5) Rosetta - A Determinism of Morality
Genre: Post-metal/post-hardcore/ambient
Country: USA

Extremely hard-hitting, spacey metal release that wonderfully combines everything from gang vocals and chaotic riffs to emotional instrumental beauty.

4) Negură Bunget - Măiestrit
Genre: Progressive/Folk/Atmospheric Black Metal
Country: Romania

Re-recording of an already spectacular older album, yet infused with more Transylvanian goodness.

3) Alcest - Écailles de Lune
Genre: Shoegaze/black metal/post-rock
Country: France

Neige's combination of airy, atmospheric shoegaze and metal should be well-known here on last.fm by now. And judging by how high this album is on other users' lists, Neige's recipe is indeed a delicious one! After many listens, I still can't quite decide if it's better than Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde…

2) Il Tempio delle Clessidre - Il Tempio delle Clessidre
Genre: Progressive rock
Country: Italy

Il Tempio delle Clessidre's debut, self-titled album is certainly worth checking out to anyone with a taste for the 'finer', more polished aspects in music. A phenomenal prog rock release that is reminiscent of the Italian scene in the 60s and 70s (Premiata Forneria Marconi, Osanna, Il Balletto di Bronzo), these Italians have showed through their debut and work with past bands that they are just as good, if not better than, the best prog rock bands throughout the decades.

1) Amia Venera Landscape - The Long Procession
Genre: Post-hardcore/ambient
Country: Italy

Metalheads, don't be turned off by the post-hardcore label. This has the brutality, chaos, and disorder of the heaviest metal releases I've heard this year; however, Amia Venera Landscape takes it a step further by combining it with emotional, heart-felt, clean vocals and undoubtedly the most technically beautiful instrumental work I've ever heard on an album. Make no mistake: this isn't your little brother's hardcore. With a mere 3,000 listeners on last.fm, AVL probably didn't gather your attention with the release of their debut full-length. Now that I'm telling you about it, you have no excuses: pick up the best album of 2010. If you have no experience with post-hardcore or you've avoided absolutely everything with the "post" prefix for fear of instrumental wank and "artsy" guitar work, there is no better place to introduce yourself to the genre than with The Long Procession.
