Radio Martin's Top Ten

Nicked from my good friend Wezzo:

Name your top 10 artists on last.fm

1. Billy Joel
2. ABBA
3. Queen
4. The Beatles
5. The Beach Boys
6. The Police
7. Elton John
8. Blondie
9. Phil Collins
10. The Kinks

Now answer the questions according to the numbers:

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
The Police - That would be Don't Stand So Close To Me, after receiving my first ever CD - 50 Years Of the Greatest Hit Singles on my birthday in 2002. The aforementioned song was one of the tracks that I liked.

What is your favorite album of 2?
Well, quite possibly ABBA Gold - Greatest Hits, but perhaps a greatest hits album is cheating a little, even if it is arguably the best Greatest Hits album ever. I will nominate 1976's Arrival as their best studio album, with the seminal Dancing Queen, Knowing Me, Knowing You, Money Money Money, When I Kissed The Teacher, and of course, the title track.

What is your favorite lyric that 5 has sung?
"You're kind of small and you're such a doll, I'm glad you're mine. You're so good to me, how come you are?"

How many times have you seen 4 live?
None, unfortunately. And two of the quartet are now dead.

What is your favorite song by 7?
Of Elton John, I would say Your Song. Though Candle in the Wind, Sacrifice, The Bitch is Back and Don't Go Breaking My Heart come very close.

What is a good memory you have involving the music of 10?
Only recently started to get into The Kinks really, so I'm a little short on memories. I guess it would be listening to You Really Got Me for the first time a couple of years ago and recognising it as the song that plays on Marge Simpson's frying pan/radio in a 1997 episode of The Simpsons.

Is there a song of 3 that makes you sad?
These Are The Days of Our Lives, as Wezzo already helpfully stated.

What is your favorite lyric that 2 has sung?
ABBA are often much-maligned for their simple lyrics but anybody who can write a hit single in a language not their own deserves my respect. Anybody who can have at least twenty hit singles in a language not their own is nothing short of talented. But let's see…I find "One of us is crying, one of us is lying, in her lonely bed, staring at the ceiling, wishing she was somewhere else instead" quite moving.

What is your favorite song by 9?
Easy Lover!

How did you get into 3?
By listening to Queen's Greatest Hits and enjoying the majority of the tracks on that CD.

What was the first song you heard by 1?
Billy Joel's first song that I remember hearing would have been Uptown Girl, the song that he's most famous for here.

What is your favorite song by 4?
I love the earlier work of The Beatles. When I'm in a good mood, I cannot resist singing along to I Want To Hold Your Hand, From Me To You, Can't Buy Me Love, et al. My most played by them is Help! so that must be my favourite.

How many time have you seen 9 live?
None, though he is still alive, which is a bonus. I've only seen #1 live.

What is a good memory you have involving 2?
Good memory involving ABBA….let's see…they're all good.

Is there a song of 8 that makes you sad?
None really, I have yet to hear a song by Blondie that makes me sad.

What is your favorite album of 5?
I generally prefer greatest hits album, so Summer Dreams. Then again, Pet Sounds is the definitive Beach Boys album, although Smile would've been good had it been recorded at the time.

What is your favorite lyric that 3 has sung?
"Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?" really moves me.

What is your favorite song of 1?
Damn….a favourite Billy Joel song? That's like picking my favourite child. I've always liked Uptown Girl and We Didn't Start the Fire, and I love Billy's sarcastic and bitter take on the music industry in The Entertainer.

What is your favorite song of 10?
A tie between Sunny Afternoon and You Really Got Me.

How many times have you seen 8 live?
None! Again.

What is your favorite album of 1?
Again, I prefer greatest hits albums, so the Ultimate Collection, but of the Billy Joel studio albums I have, An Innocent Man has six tracks of ten that I really like.

What is a great memory you have considering 9?
At university, in my room, listening to Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight at about 1am, and turning the speakers up really loud at the famous drum bit near the end of the song.

What was the first song you heard by 8?
Heart of Glass, back in 2002.

What is your favorite cover by 2?
Well, ABBA pretty much released only the songs that they wrote, except there is one track on the Voulez-Vous album which is the B-side of Summer Night City, and is a medley of older songs, but I haven't heard it, so I can't say. So that's my favourite of their only covers then, I guess.
