    also, well, i think terms like "fine art" and "avant-garde" are becoming obsolete, not because there is no more quality music or no more experimentation but because contemporary music is less academic and more underground, so there is less expectation for music to be "graceful" or something...and there are all these different sounds and methods that have already been explored but not perfected or expanded upon. but making music on computers brings about so much more possibilities live and in the studio, and there is more (niche) interest in performing and documenting improvisation.

    well, first define "fine art" ... if you mean "avant-garde" then pitchfork certainly isn't the place to look for that... in the realm of modern classical there is still musique concrete and electroacoustic music being made today, and new movements to take note of are the spectralism genre and the wandelweiser group... also i'm not sure if you consider improvised music to be fine art but a fair amount of new musical ground has been covered in the '90s and '00s with improvised music... there is also the less academic but still beautiful and inventive (sometimes) noise/drone/ambient scene... i see you listen to black dice... maybe you would like sunshine has blown? they have the same sort of idiosyncratic playfulness found in "creature comforts" or "beaches & canyons" but are probably even more radical and meditative
