I think ripping off music is by far worse. Who really cares for the visuals?

Who was Lily Allen copying? or was it the other way round? Same with the Janet Jackson/Rihanna one?

The Mars Volta one is pushing it. And I also agree with Kelemvor.

Some of these are going a little too far. "Woah, man, he has glasses and an afro too! The Mars Volta is such a rip-off!" I have an equally as hard time understanding your Janelle Monae comparison and a few others. Aside from that, you need to understand that possibly "ripping off" photography is not the problem with music nowadays. Photography isn't music. Interesting comparisons, I'll admit, but I don't really agree with its meaning.

What some pop fans think is that their artists are originally musically and in imagery. While I enjoy lots of pop , starting from the imagery which is what they first look at, there's a lot of rip-offs. Okay, maybe the TMV one wasn't too accurate but the rest is. Janelle Monae took it from Vaughan, it's not shocking news. What I consider bad in ripping off photography is that they're stating that by image they're representing the innovation, the point is they're not doing it, not musically, not when it comes to image either, when I listen to bands like Oasis or Beady Eye, they sound a lot like The Beatles to me, but it's forbidden to say that because the Gallagher brothers are "so original". Image isn't the MOST relevant part of it but actually it's a relevant part.

I think it's a great thing that artists nowadays try to reproduce their idols...

Good artists copy, great artists steal. The imitation of the style of previous eras isn't the problem, it's the music simply not being as good as previous eras that's the problem. The current pop top 40 seems to be choc-a-bloc with plasticky nastiness.

i don't think there's anything wrong with paying homage to those that have come before you and inspired you as long as you make it clear that you are referencing someone else's work. just as when recalling a quote it is customary to state who you are quoting. i think the problem is that most people don't take the time or effort to find out about the influences of the modern music they listen to. that and it seems to me that people just copy without adding their own originality and the music gets watered down and inflated over time.
