I’ve gotten in the habit of rummaging thought the $5.99 and under rack at Greywhale to get CDs. The prices are usually $3.99, sometimes $5.99, and its buy two get one free; and I can always find at least 3 moderately interesting CDs, sometimes 6. And if I don’t end up liking the whole CD I just trade it away on lala for something I actually want. So I thought I’d start posting on what I got and what possessed me to pickup the CDs. Geek time.

I was reading about blackholes and came across this in wikipedia:

I decided that my albums I own tag shold be expanded to include albums I own and have owned in the past. My collection is big but when you include the stuff I've either given away, traded , or lost it's huge!

I thought the 500 tags in my Punk tag was alot but now albums I own is my biggest tag. And 50% of those contain 10-15 streamable tracks. That's alot of good music. Case in point: I ended the night tagging Rhapsody and Richard Cheese in (I'm going alphabetically).

Well after getting most of the discographies of Rush and Styx my prog-rock binge has passed. Styx is way better than I remember, Rush is worse (except for their first album).

I’m still loving all the Power Metal, I just wish Dragonforce had more music, they’re awesome. Why can’t they have as many albums as Sonata Arctica or Rhapsody? Now I’m collecting Edguy, great stuff from what I’ve gotten through. I’ve only listened to two of the CDs of the 6 I have, I really need to sit down and listen to the rest.

I’ve never used this to just talk about what I’m doing so here’s a more personal journal on my musical life.

The musicbrainz tagging fever has died down but only because I’m waiting till we get a transliteration AdvancedRelationship (I should be typing the RFV right now), but the majority of my english/american library is in now so I can slow down. Now I’m re-ripping all my CDs that are at 128kbps to 196, the trouble is that over the last 7 years they’ve been hammered and are barely readable now. I’m not going to go out and buy 200…

A few people here have mentioned this app but it's relatively unknown on last.fm so I thought I'd enlighten people. No this isn’t an advertisement, I just know any audiophile will love what this can do for them.

Last.fm groups artists based on other peoples tastes and allows you to discover new music based on what others listen to. But after finding this music and spending hundreds of dollars in CDs, you have a gigantic library of songs and you can't possibly remember them all. Thanks to us these albums and artists are now streamable on last.fm. There is the very real possibility that this group had nothing to do with this and it's all a coincidence that these artists had their info added. But don't steal our thunder! You never know how much of a difference raising your voice to ask made to the world. Afterall a butterfly flaps its wings in London and causes a Hurricane in Florida and all that right?

I'm not sure if you’ve heard of these guys but if you're into Metal, Punk, Reggae, or even Hip-Hop and Electroinca you might want to check them out.

It's hard to describe their style, like Transplants they're almost a new breed of music; Merging many styles into a single song and coming up with something that not just listenable but really good and will you having out grooving/headbanging on the floor.

I don't like telling people what genres are and what defines one genre vs. another; I find they are totally dependant upon the listener. One person's rock is another's metal etc. But you can’t avoid using them, they describe music; even if they are dependant upon your own take on music as far as generalization they help define Giuseppe Verdi vs. Britney Spears. It doesn’t help genre confusion when there are so many bands that span so many genres that can easily be classified as one type of music or another depending upon the track.
