And it don't stop...not yet anyway...

As I've been scrobbling my music (that sounds both dirty and British) it seems more hiphop than anything has been the constant. Makes sense as it's been a big part of my musical life. Here's a few things I think of when I think of my relationship with the hiphop.

In no particular order outside of when I typed them…

Hearing

Rapper's Delightfor the first time as a goofy seven yr old in 1979 at Antoinette Washington's folks house party. That Chic sample along with the rhymes of WonderMike, Big Bank Hank and the one they call the Master Gee hooked me like a trout, and I've been dangling on the line ever since…

The first songs I ever taped off the radio (KPOO 89.5 with the Baron "diggin' deep for the beat" and KK rotating into the pilot seat for "another soulful Sunday afternoon) were It's Tricky Roxanne Roxanne Little did I know how many finger blisters I'd get trying to stop the tape before the dj started talking…yeah, you know you did it too…

Using my double tapedeck boombox (LASONIC baby!) to make a "pause breaks" tape using Slow and Low so James,Kerry and I could frestyle without those pesky guys that actually knew how to rap getting in the way…

Buying 45's with my brother and sister at the Tower Records (RIP) on Bay and Columbus. Among the mini platters bought were Electric Kingdom, Clear as well as Siberian Nights (all during the electro and breakdancing phases I was in at the time) There were also Culture Club and New Edition records bought but that's neither here nor there…;-)

Listening to It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back for an entire summer and becoming more intimate with it than any woman…

Hmm…perhaps I've said too much..

Getting Straight Outta Compton, playing it like crazy and having my mother tell me she was disappointed in me because of it…

Becoming a fan of old funk and RnB thanks to discovering where the samples came from. For the longest time I didn't know they were sampling at all…I mean, who woulda thought that Hurby LuvBug didn't write all those awesome tunes for Kid n Play and Kwame'

Even when the music started letitng me down it got me to branch out into other genres and helped make me the (reasonably) well-rounded appreciater I am today…

And although it does make me sad more often than not currently, I still keep tabs on it. I sill check up on it like the old girlfriend you never quite got over.

The emotional stake is still there…
