I'm gonna write a small review about musical releases durinbg year 2010, so here we go ! As usual, please don't pay attention to my english mistakes, I am French, so I'm sorry for two things : my president and my english.
Didn't listen to In your room by Agua de Annique, but I listened to Wonder which is absolutely wonderful, Anneke's voice is still stunning.
NEVER AGAIN, PLEASE :
ムック – 球体 (Kyuutai) : What can I say about this album ? Where are MUCC -breaking-heart-songs ? Where are MUCC-not-easy-but-so-powerful-songs-that-makes-me-think-they-are-the-best ? I had the impression that these songs could have been written by any other band … MUCC COME BACK. (And Ken get lost) I think we are now many MUCC fans hating him …
Unfortunately, I had no favorite songs …
STRANGE :
Antony and The Johnsons - The Crying Light : I knew him because of his duet with Björk especially on Dull Flame of Desire which was one of my fave tracks on Volta. I then bought the album, I expected something strange and unsual (Antony's voice is on its own, strange and unusual) and I wasn't disappointed and loved some songs very much (Epilepsy is dancing, her eyes are underneath the ground, Another World, The crying light …). Pretty good album if you aren't allergic to weird but pleasant music.
GOOD :
Arctic Monkeys – Humbug : I'm a huge fan of Arctic Monkeys and of everything Alex Turner does (I sound like a pure fangirl –), so I loved the two others albums. Then, I was SO surprised when I listened to this album. Where is the Monkeys' energy, where are their powerful songs ? (Yes, I love « Where … » questions) It's not a bad album and I quite like to listen to this album, but I always listen to the same songs which are My Propeller, Pretty Visitors and The Jeweller's hands which is a masterpiece. I don't find Crying Lightning so awesome, I love the beginning of the song and the couplets but I hate the chorus, just a classic pop-rock chorus. When I'm listenning to this, nothing makes me think « Here are Arctic Monkeys ». The other songs sound all the same to me.
When I read articles about this album, something is always written : « This is the album of ripeness ». It's just stupid : writing more quiet sounds doesn't mean you're more « mature », I think they've had this « ripeness » since their first album.
Archive – Controlling Crowds : Good album. I didn't listen to it so much, and I think that if I had heard them during a concert, I would probably have put this album in GREAT, but I missed them again. I would probably have needed to listen to this album again and again.
Muse – The Resistance : I loved Uprising, repeating sounds you can hear at the beginning remind me of Marilyn Manson songs, but I didn't like Undisclosed desires so much … But I went to the concert in November in Lyon, and this was awesome. The Three parts of exogenesis are wonderful. Not their best album but I wasn't disappointed at all.
GREAT
Florence + The Machine – Lungs : THANKS TO MATTHIEU (onebreathaway) to make me discover her (and to invite me to her concert in March) She is just impressive. Her voice is so powerful and breathtaking, I can't wait to the concert.
Favorite songs : Howl, Blinding, Cosmic Love, Drumming Song.
The Gathering – The West Pole : I always tought that Anneke was the best female voice and I didn't know what to expect from the band after her walkout. The West Pole is different from what they did before, but there's always their sound that makes me feel something special when I listen to them. Silje is a great singer too, she sometimes sings in some « Anneke's way » like on You Promised me a Symphony (best song with No bird call IMO)
Patrick Wolf – The Bachelor : 2009 was the year of the revelation. His name was Patrick Wolf. I haven't loved an album so much and listen to it so much since Meds by Placebo. There's no bad songs, there's only songs I love a little less than the other (actually, it only concerns Who will). I listened to his whole discography : everything is as fantastic as the Bachelor.
Favorite songs : The Bachelor, Hard Times, Oblivion, The Sun is often out, Blackdown, Count of Casualty, Thickets.
Bat for Lashes – Two Suns : The same as fur and gold : wonderful. Even better in concert, Natasha Khan has an incredible voice and energy (and she's lovely), I hope the next album will be as great as the others.
Favorite songs : Glass, Sleep Alone, Siren Song, Pearl's Dream.
メリー – under-world : Thanks merry for saving japanese music this year. Among all the japanese bands I listen to, they are the only ones who didn't disappoint me.
Favorite songs : under-world, ピラニア (THE BEEEEEST), 激声 (of course)
