No, didn’t make Wath this year, had a wedding in Telford that weekend, couldn’t get out of it I was best man! And guess who was topping the bill at Wath? Your boys Ahab! Bloody typical Sod’s Law!!! Apart from that things have been pretty quiet, just the news I left you in the shout below ↓ which I don’t reckon you’ve even seen! So, enjoy the Spring before it disappears – keep smiling.

Howdy, how goes it? Hope you and yours are doing OK. Rick Ford was good, though it took some time getting there and back, snow was pretty overwhelming in Derbyshire. Native & the Name get better (locally) – never heard them on the radio or anywhere else for that matter but they are going from strength to strength both musically and song-writing wise (for young-uns!). Reliving my past at the moment, doing research on MOD styles through the 60s to the present day, I’m surprised the days of zoot suits and vespas never really went away! All for an article for the Yorkshire Post Sunday mag so I’m still keeping my hand in as they say. How’s the uke coming on? Have you heard of Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole? He appears to be quite an expert at it and has a good set of tunes about him. So, as the sun shines brightly in God’s own county I shall bid thee well – hope the weathers looking up for you too – take care.

I probably exaggerated the musical black spot feature, as Norwich is not so far away and we have tickets for both The Staves and The Leisure Society in April. The last band to tempt me to the Forum were the Smoke Fairies in my time at Lye Green, which is close enough to TW. Visits to see FC are generally confined to the winter tours – and we were both in the same TW audience in 2009 along with evilibby – as Cropredy clashed with family hols for many years and I never developed the FC festival habit. I still seem to be stubbornly avoiding the Oxfordshire fields but I can see the merits, especially the up-and-coming bands, where there have been excellent choices in recent years. Enjoy yourself on Sunday

Greetings from East Angular having moved away from the delights of the East Sussex/Kent border . I see we have both been enjoying Ellen and the Escapades recently. Thank goodness Last.fm continues to provide new leads to follow even in this musical black spot.

Hey, good to hear you are doing OK, had a feel of a uke after you told me about the plan and I can see that it is an awkward instrument to get the hang of. Busy is good – I’ve forgotten about busy with semi-retirement. Alice Cooper eh, he’s probably better at golf these days if all the other oldies are anything to go by, hope not. Frank Turner, Spotify here I come! Festivals! Wath quite definitely, don’t know who’s on yet but it’s close eh. Shepley Spring (May) is a goer as well, Martin Simpson is headlining and the rest look interesting. I’m going to see Rick Ford (remember him) in Matlock next week, we have mailed each other on a pretty regular basis since ‘Joey’s Song’ and he invited me, so, why not? If you get the chance listen to his ‘Voices of Yesterday’ from the new album, 10mins of class with an awesome Chesterfield Pentecostal choir. Right, good to hear from you again, here’s hoping the weather improves and we get some good music into our heads this year. Take care – Mik.

Howdy stranger! How have you and the family been and how is the uke getting along, you must be good enough for the odd 'open mic' night. Not done a lot lately, too damn cold to be gadding about! Now spring appears to be on the horizon I will plan a few excursions - I came into a bit of money quite unexpectedly so may see a few festivals this year! 'spect Cropredy is top of the list for you. Hope you are doing ok and trust I've not upset you in some way. Keep smiling.

Lastfm leaves a lot to be desired don’t they I noticed AJC was gigging with DP, you of course have seen Pegg many times, I’ve only caught him once when he worked with Tull years ago. I have to say I wasn’t that impressed with the new Albion band though I’ve only heard the album. Ahab are really hitting the right spot with me at the moment, if you see they are up my way, let me know. Ukulele eh! See, I spelled it right as well! A few weeks before I went to London I saw a chap at a local pub advertising his new book – The Uke of Wallington – nice play on words and Wallington was where I was headed so it looked like a good omen. Check it out on You tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm4tD7-lObc – get the paperback, it’s a good read about a guy who couldn’t make it in a band so he took up the uke and went on a tour at open mic nights – very true, very funny actually and his sound is pretty good all things being equal And don’t even mention Christmas. Keep smiling.

Sounds like a great night, it really is a bloody good live performance. Now Luke Jackson, sounds promising, I'll give him a few plays - now if you look on his Lastfm page I notice the spring chicken sleeve for 'More than boys' but who is the dude with the beard on the other albums? I've got Heidi Talbot in a cathedral (I'm getting into these gigs, the acoustics are brilliant) and Native and the Name release their second album live, I'll be there, apart from that getting ready for Xmas...again! Seems like the last one was only last month. Keep smiling.

Great new albums by the Mumford boys and Bellowhead but I reckon I don't need to tell you about either really - hope all is going well, keep smiling.

The Blues Band were bloody terrific, great rocking' music, dancing in the aisles, and Georgie Fame on keyboards as a bonus. Got into the sound-check, renewed my aquaintence with Mr Jones (Yvonne and I have known him off and on since the middle 80s, Vonny was a huge Manfred Mann fan! and Fi, Paul's wife, is the daughter of the vicar whose church Yvonne went to) and got an invite to the 50th anniversary gig in Sheffield. Good day all round.

Cheers for the info, I could do with you as a PA - I've joined soundcloud, I seem to remember someone telling me about it but as usual, never got round to doing anything until pushed! The three tracks are interesting and I've found the Askews and Beth Rowley, one of my tips from 4 yrs ago that had very little promotion so I'm quite a happy bunny! Thanks again.

You are right about the ,ol boys'. Now I'm jealous, you're close to the action down there, buskers and the like, I spied a few I thought excellent while I was there - unlike us hicks up here having to put up with allsorts! I've made a note of your hints and will look into them. Have you heard of Ebony Buckle? She was on BBC's George Gently last night singing folk songs and playing fiddle - bloody good, though I thought she was probably an actress miming but I've just googled her and she's a real folkie. She has a beautiful voice and I need to find some stuff by her. She's not on Spotty or Amazon so! that's me stuck, put out some feelers for me. Got tickets for SOH and the Blues Band so two different gigs to look forward too. Keep smiling and gigging and take care. Mik.

Apologies for taking so long but as you know I've been to the big city! No music involved, stayed with my old drummer from the 60s and his good lady. It was a special trip for me as I went to the Tate to see the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painting, they are my heroes as their attitude to life and work was just like the Stones and I kinda like that! So it was a cultural trip really. I see you've dropped some new names into my musical bowl, will have a look at the all in the next few days when I get back to normal, so to speak. Farlowe was brilliant - unlike Macca, Elton and a lot of other oldies, he still has a voice - I don't know how you feel but seeing Macca and Elton at the olympic opening, I was not impressed. Take care - Mik.

Have a good Cambridge, I see ahab & King C are on board and the ol' devil Roy Harper. Hope the weather stays fair for you all. SOH are coming to Donny (October!) and I'm going to see a reet ol' geezer tomorrow - Chris Farlowe, you'll probably not remember him, too young, lucky girl - anyway have a cracking weekend - all that and a brass band on Saturday, what more could you want?

King Charles I like very much indeed - bit of Sparks in there don't you think?

Just a quickie. Chased the Olympic torch back from Beverley – I was impressed with the setup, not as organised as Whitby but good all the same. Span were brilliant, Carthy was traditional and funny, caught up with a few friends and guess what? Ahab were spot on, not heard that much by them apart from on Spotty and there’s not a lot on there but they were excellent. Don’t know whether I’ve said this before but they remind me of a UK Fleet Foxes – the harmonies were spot on and it was a very enjoyable show – you’ve convinced me! Perhaps I may even buy an album! Hope all are OK and the weather is better – take care.

No, nothing untoward in the mail and the pics were there on both so no problems - I'll get back to you in more detail by 'proper' email while I get out of the 50s in my quest!
