AOL News Article: Conspiracy Theories Keep 'Coast to Coast' Fans Talking

by Lee Speigel

(Nov. 2) – George Noory says that if he weren't a national radio talk show host, he'd probably be in politics.

That's not surprising. As the primary host of "Coast to Coast AM," the biggest overnight radio program in North America, Noory's voice reaches millions of nightly (or overnightly) listeners on 540 stations and streams to 10 million more over the Internet.

Ever since Noory took over the the permanent hosting duties of the Premiere Radio Networks show from Art Bell in 2003, he been a leading voice in the nightly explorations of things that often go bump in the night: UFOs, psychic phenomena, monsters, time travel and the conspiracy theories surrounding all these things.

"We deal with more than just the supernatural. We deal with conspiracies, mysteries, alternative medicine – issues that really strike home to people," he told AOL News.

"We are touching a nerve," he said. "We are telling people that things just aren't what they seem, whether it's in government or medicine, and we're giving them that opportunity – that perspective – to open up their own eyes and ears and make their own minds up."

Noory, who earned a distinguished Navy Achievement Award for service as a U.S. Naval Reserve officer, has his pulse on what's on the minds of many Americans, dissatisfied with how the country and their lives are going, and he offers clear and effective information that people can use.

"This is one of the first times in history that people are at a point where, pulling the old phrase from the movie, 'Network,' 'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore,' " he said. "People are at that point right now: They're tired, they're fed up – and they don't trust anything."

While Noory targets mostly things dealing with the unexplained, he tends to avoid getting political for his huge late-night audience.

"We will talk to some politicians about issues that affect people, economic issues and things like that. We've done things on gun control because it affects Americans and their rights.

"But I try to stay away from pure politics and the generic shows that you hear during the daytime: abortion, politics, the death penalty, things like that. They're important issues, but I leave that for the mainstream guys."
Yet, Noory doesn't shy away from what he refers to as his own conspiracy theory, outlined in his recent book "Journey to the Light," (Forge Books), co-authored with William J. Birnes.

"I think that things on this planet are being done to manipulate people. It's always been done. But it's being done to a point where they don't want us to grow, and they don't want us to be intelligent about certain things.

"But basically, nothing is what it seems. Look at the broader picture. Always ask yourself, 'Who benefits? Why is this being done?' And you generally will find your answers."

Is Noory suggesting there's a global movement to keep people from empowering themselves?

"No question about it. I truly believe that the powers that be, whoever they may be, want population control – good or bad – and when I say good or bad, there's no question this planet is going to be overpopulated. The problem is, how do you solve that? I think they would like to solve it in a way that most of us wouldn't.

"But yes, it is keeping us from developing so we can be controlled and manipulated."

Why does he think any government would favor mass population control?

"Control because it's total greed. When you have a world of the haves and the have-nots, those who have want to keep getting, and they want to keep it. And the only way they can keep it is to control the rest of the population. You know, throw them a few crumbs every once in a while – keep them happy. Give them their TV and their radial tires – that's what they're doing to people."

With a tone almost sounding like a political candidate, Noory suggests that American voters may not have elected the right man – Barack Obama – to the presidency.

"There was no right guy to elect. What they elected was the hope of the right guy, and they didn't get that. His health plan should have simply said, 'Look, we've got to work on a way to protect Americans, and it's going to take us some time to do the right thing,' rather than rush something through that 99 percent of us still have no idea what it is.

"What this administration should have done was to work out a plan, very effectively, and take time to do it, rather than this instant, 'I gotta fix it,' and now we're in a bigger mess than we were before.

"There's two more years to go and I think Obama will not get re-elected if this continued trend is there – he's got to pull a rabbit out of the hat on this one."

Another news-making event – the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill – became almost a nightly passionate topic for Noory on "Coast to Coast AM."

"I was furious at the way this happened. First of all, we rejected other countries' help. And whenever there's a disaster, people let us in – why couldn't we let some people in? They could've probably helped stop this thing months before it finally occurred.

"But I just sensed that there was something very weird about all of this – there was something wrong. How could you build it and not fix it so soon without having regulations in place?"

Talking with Noory one on one, you get the sense that he sounds like someone running for office.

"I was thinking about it," he admitted.

"This is an incredible country, and we can help make this an incredible planet for people. Our military should be one of defense and to stop oppression – pure and simple. Not to go and occupy countries.

"We have the resources to feed this planet right now, and we should be doing a more thorough job doing that – just making people's lives a little more comfortable."
