5. Yr Go To by Architecture in Helsinki
- I was actually quite let down by Architecture in Helsinki's latest album, Moment Bends. However, after I went to see them live in May, my opinion of the album did change. One of the stand out tracks from the set that they played was "Yr Go To".
The energy on stage was fantastic and the Christmas Bells sealed the deal for me. They do make the song a whole lot better and more uplifting.
The rest of the album is not too bad…although I am a bit disappointed that they place "That Beep" on the album when the song is at least 3 years old. It's hard to enjoy the album as much as the first two offerings. I liked their music better when there were several different kinds of instruments being played and when the music had a more organic feel to it.
Moment Bends just seems a little bit generic and glossy compared to their other albums. That's not to say that it is a BAD album, because it by no means is.
4. By Your Hand by Los Campesinos!
- This is their best track from their latest album, "Hello Sadness." I can't speak highly enough of Los Campesinos! They are one of those bands that I was really fortunate to come across. In fact, I discovered them through this very website (courtesy of the "similar artists" section on Architecture in Helsinki's page)!
3. Pull Out My Insides by Does It Offend You, Yeah?
- I was running through the Triple J Hitlist one week and I downloaded a whole bunch of music without listening to it beforehand. This song came up and
I was very surprised to see that it was actually by Does It Offend You, Yeah?
They're a really strange band in the sense that some of their songs are really dancey and may have no lyrics to them, and then you have the tracks like this and "Dawn of the Dead" which are do, and sound like an electro-rock outfit.
The main guitar part in the song is the main selling point for me.
2. Lost Weekend by Art Brut
- If you have heard any of Art Brut's previous work (especially from "Bang, Bang Rock & Roll") you would be surprised when giving this song it's first listen. Why?
Well…the lead singer is actually…singing!
Yes, most of their other songs consist of Eddie shouting or almost talking the lyrics to the songs, but "Lost Weekend", he adopts a low-toned almost hum to sing the lyrics.
Speaking of the lyrics, they are what you can expect from Art Brut. Not taking themself too seriously and telling an easy-to-follow story at the same time.
1. Safari Disco Club by Yelle
- I don't have a clue what the singer is singing, because she's French. Regardless of this, it still sounds fantastic and this is a very danceable track. The singer is also pretty cute.
Yeah, what a lame description for my favourite song of the year.
I can't really describe the appeal, it's something that you have to listen to for yourself I suppose.
