I actually did more research and retract what I said about Pink Floyd...even if they don't fit my definition of progressive, I can entirely see how they fit the overall term. Maybe if I was around in the '70s...now for some underground talent promotion. http://ontologics.bandcamp.com/album/something-to-needle-over Amazing underground progressive rock/hip hop with psychedelic elements and intense, tight drumming!

Saying that Pink Floyd has "Brian Eno style parts" is the same as saying that Eno has Pink Floyd style parts, because they are contemporaries who pioneered the atmospheric side of prog around the same time. However, Floyd are a psychedelic rock band and Eno has been an experimental electronic composer for most of his solo career, so they can't be lumped together stylistically. I suggest reading the whole Wikipedia article on prog as well as this definition to learn more. There's a lot more to prog than symphonic rock.:)

I actually want to open up a discussion: Do you guys consider bands like Nothing More, Twelve Foot Ninja and Dead Letter Circus more progressive or experimental? The song structures feel like modern progressive music to me because of the tone explorations and the high concept lyrics, even if they aren't on concept albums (though Twelve Foot Ninja is pretty awesomely themed.) Australia just seems to be leading progressive rock on that front to me (Nothing More is from Texas, but hey have blatant Australian influences.) Hell, even their progressive metal like Ne Obliviscaris is pushing the progressive metal genre forward.

I actually want to see more progressive rock bands push in the symphonic direction these days, like that symphonic tribute to Haken...imagine those two groups working together for a concert! When pretty much everything has been to some degree outside of technology advances, I actually consider the good djent bands more progressive than neo-prog and such, regardless of how awesome I find Spock's Beard. Anything truly progressive by traditional standards will just get labelled avant-garde, hence why the term has shifted to describe song structure. Not sure why I feel a need to clarify this, maybe because it irks me seeing what's being called 'progressive' these days...

@Axeman_Eugene I know precisely what it means...but given that Steven Wilson is here when he just watered down Pink Floyd further, it kinda says everything to me. Seriously, I wouldn't hate him if people didn't treat him like such a progressive god among men, he's as progressive as Depeche Mode (which isn't an insult to Depeche Mode, my charts should be evident enough of that.) If we're going by the old definition of progressive rock, even the neo-prog bands I like would be called regressive and only the avant-garde groups like Magma would still be called progressive...hence why I go by song structure. For what they are, Pink Floyd do well enough...I'm just not much for Brian Eno style parts in my rock, maybe it was progressive back then...now I hear a lot of it in "adult contemporary," whatever that means.

@ParalelFuture, every music genre has its limits, even richer ones like prog-rock. Prog-rock was in a decline by the mid-70's. Bands started to run out of good ideas. Many people just stopped following them and the bands either started to disband or change line-ups. Why they gone pop? If you wanted to sell in late-70's and 80's, it should be either disco, AOR, new wave or granny "rawk" shit like Air Supply. No other option.

  • TheProgRockFan

For answer ParalelFuture, a economic crisis occured at the end of the 70's so the record companies didn't want to pay much money for progressive bands who can't make radio friendly songs, so bands who can't make earn money. So they just made pop.

I've been creating an extensive prog playlist on Spotify and I thought I'd share it in case you're interested: click here! There's a good mixture of stuff from each decade and some bands like Tool and King Crimson are absent for obvious reasons, but if you'd like to help out and think I should add something, just gimme a shout.

Pink Floyd are a full blown prog band, like them or not. One of the most important ones at that. This is a really tired discussion in the prog community.

I don't think Pink Floyd doesn't even rate as progressive in any form...I'd be a lot less hard on them and Steven Wilson if people called them experimental instead, it fits far better.

Pink Floyd are pretty overrated...though Piper at the Gates of Dawn is hysterical. Puts them a notch above Steven Wilson as far as blandness goes.

Pink Floyd is one of the few prog bands i can't like at all. Some bands I listen and think "meh, it's okay, but not so much". PF is more like "I can't hear one more minute of this song..." Maybe I'll start to like it someday in the future, but for now... I don't know...

@aborted_one, for me Progressive Rock is the fusion of mainsteam rockmusic and contemporary art music, which contains positive experiments, making pop and rock scenes evolve and develop, as antithesis to hipsterquasi-avantgarde which isn't doing anything for enrichment of musical culture. True prog/art rock is the music that produce fresh ideas for the next generations, and what's why it called progressive.

Hey I started a new group for music fanatics, the focus is going to be different than the ExMF and the frosty paradigm. It's a bit of an experiment but if a bunch of people get in it could be cool. Join if you are interested. I want this group to become a center for music discussion on Lastfm (even though it's metal centered, other genres are more than welcome to be discussed.) Cheers! http://www.last.fm/group/Unholy+Cult+of+the+Appraised+and+Damned

conservative rock [2] Prog is elitist. It's music for introverts, people with a classical sense of aesthetics who grew up with rock music. That is not a value judgment in any way. But hipsters and punks DO need to shut the fuck up. Prog isn't for you and it never will be.
