    Guys it's just music.

Then you probably know that gothic metal and gothic rock are quite a different things (maybe you also know that the word "gothic" was an ironic label at first, and those guys who invented the term back in late 70s didn't think about gothic novels or decadent romanticism). First of all, gothic metal is (surprise!) a metal subgenre, heavily influenced by doom. Even if Evanescence was a gothic metal band (it isn't, really), it wouldn't belong here. And did I say that gothic rock bands have to imitate SoM to stay true? Gothic rock can be very different. Some modern acts such as Liquid Grey or Terminal Gods don't sound the same like the 90's legends such as Rosetta Stone or like the Batcave dinosaurs such as Alien Sex Fiend. Do I really need to explain such an obvious things?

Of course I have read articles and forums, but most of all I have my ears to have an opinion about the subject, dont you? Yes I've listed post-punk as example, but some gothic metal bands by whom Evanescence is inspired, have similar approach. My whole point is that some people just limit this tag to bands who copy the sound of The Sisters of Mercy (who don't even cosider themselves as gothic rock), just to this late 80's and early 90's sound with cowboy's image, and they would like to see only those bands in top artists here. But even Joy Division, that has been arguably described by many as gothic, sounds very different to the sound you are talking about. Imo it's just a matter of interpreting the word "gothic".

"it's the certain qualities in music too of course" - of course! And Evanescence clearly lacks such qualities. "more introvertic and dark approach found in post-punk" - well, first you say that gothic rock tag doesn't describe "only few post-punk bands", then you suddenly evoke post-punk as example. DCD, Cranes and Switchblade Symphony aren't "gothic rock" (which doesn't mean they're bad), and CoX are much more darkwave than gothic rock - no matter what they think, it's important what music they make. Considering clothes and parties, you should understand that "gothic rock" and "goth subculture" isn't the same thing. There's no "goth ideology" (or "goth worldview", lol) which automatically makes the band gothic. There are distinct musical characteristics that distinguish gothic rock from other styles of music, and they have nothing to do with "dark romanticism" or ideology or image. Did you even try to read any book or forum about gothic rock?

@Blood_Gothic See? you have totally bias opinion. No I don't think it's only about the lyrics, it's the certain qualities in music too of course. By "nihilistic" I had in mind a more introvertic and dark approach found in post-punk, contrary to punk. Goth IS about some kind of ideology of appreciating the beauty in darkness, that's why we have such different bands called goth: Dead Can Dance, Sisters of Mercy, Clan of Xymox, Cranes, Switchblade Symphony... And your degrading this to clothes and partys is totally ridiculous and shows that maybe you try to fit in with some people without any reflection. And by the way, by using "We" you sound very pretentious.

"it's about dark romanticism, aesthetics in lyrics like in gothic novel and overall a nihilistic approach" - what a ridiculous statement. So you classify music not by its sound but by the songs' lyrics? Well, there are many bands that are all "about dark romanticism" but have nothing to do with goth subculture - as well as plenty of artists who had never shown any interest in so-called "gothic aesthetics" but nonetheless sound gothic as hell. Besides, I don't know what "nihilistic approach" you are talking about, considering the band which was aired on the fucking christian radio. Goth is not about any ideology, it's about music and clothes and parties, so your ill-invented term "pagan rock" is lame, too. People like you are annoying: we are struggling to maintain our subcultural identity, and you try to ruin what we try to keep.

@Blood_Gothic you dont have to preach me about what female-fronted gothic rock sounds like because most of my library consists of such bands. I just see and hear some similarities. Of course not every band dressed in black is gothic, you're right, but it's about dark romanticism, aesthetics in lyrics like in gothic novel and overall a nihilistic approach. You can find this in early Evanescence stuff. I'm just tired of snobs who uncritically follow one opinion of certain music journalist and bash everything that hasn't got the EXACT sound. But to be objective, Evanescence shouldnt be in the top six of gothic rock that's for sure. Inkubus Sukkubus also shouldn't, because that's more of a pagan rock.

Nope, lots of ignorant retards here. If you tag every artist dressed in black as "gothic rock", you should probably tag Johnny Cash as "goth", lol. Evanescence has nothing to do with gothic rock at all, and let me tell you, Lacuna Coil isn't "gothic" as well (even true gothic metal has very few common traits with old-school gothic rock, basically). Check Skeletal Family and the early Inkubus Sukkubus records to understand how female-fronted gothic rock bands sound like. Evanescence, HIM and other "dark-dressed" alternative metal musicians never even called themselves "gothic", but mainstream-oriented high-school kids know everything better, of course.

I had no idea this was an actual music genre until now. I always thought it was just a meaningless descriptor for image-heavy mallgoth bands. This is some pretty good stuff. :)

Evanescence is not a rock gothic band

Lots of snobs here. "Gothic" is a contractual term, stop claiming this tag to only few post-punk bands. Evanescence can be tagged gothic 'cuz they share the same aesthetics as the more traditional representatives of the genre. But to be more accurate, they are a soft version of gothic metal ( influenced by Lacuna Coil and indirectly by Paradise Lost). Deal with it.

"Secondly besides being somewhat romantic and dark HIM and Evanescence have nothing in common with Gothic or gothic rock." You do realize that Dark Romanticism and Goth are the same thing? HIM is influenced by The Fields of the Nephilim (and are going on tour with them soon), The Sisters Of Mercy, and The Mission as well as Black Sabbath and Type O Negative. Therefore, HIM IS Gothic. Not that it matters seeing how Goth isn't a genre of music. If you look at all the bands back in the 80s that were labeled Gothic you'll be hardpressed to find a unifiable sound. My research indicates that the term was used to describe any band that resonated with the aesthetic and imagery found in Gothic literature. So, yes, Evanescence, The 69 Eyes (whom are influenced a whole lot by The Sisters of Mercy), and HIM are Gothic. Doesn't mean you have to like them. But it's pretentious to try and distance them from the term simply because of that.

"Why doesn't anybody admit that Evanescence has gothic rock/metal influences" they don't admit to it because it's not true they have no influences at all and are just a generic pop-rock band with a teen angst i wear black and complain attitude.

This tag is so tainted..gothic rock is what was in the early 80s mostly, the trad goth bands like The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees...Evanescence and stuff related to it is gothic METAL, a genre which was created much later and started the romantic goth era. It almost has nothing to do with the original goth rock, only took the idea of the goth idealogy. It's like you grab goth rock's lyrics, fuse in all kinds of metal (death, thrash, black, blah blah...) and put in a beautiful woman's voice to get back into the middle of the beauty-horror scale.
