You can't say "djent is way batter than deathcore", that makes no sense... think in terms of individual bands and how good they are.

I'm not really a fan of 'djent' but it is way better than deathcore.

Djent is the new Deathcore. Largely uninspired with a lot of copycat bands who fail to create any kind of atmosphere, however it is possible to dig out the odd gem.

Old man metalhead here. Just got into djent bands in the last month. I'm really liking what I hear. I haven't been into metal in awhile except the occasional Devin Townsend, Lamb of God, Meshuggah, etc. Lots of talented musicians in this tech-djent-prog "sub-genre". Good stuff, man.

@Bobo9390: That may be true, for quite a few bands, but it doesn't apply for any of the top 8 bands listed on this tag. For example, Ater the Burial have been playing a sound that at least faintly resembles 'Djent' since their 2006 debut LP. They still play Djent now. It's a fad, but there are definitely bands that are what you can say 'Honest' Djent bands.

Hey I started a new group for music fanatics, the focus is going to be different than the ExMF and the frosty paradigm. It's a bit of an experiment but if a bunch of people get in it could be cool. Join if you are interested. I want this group to become a center for music discussion on Lastfm (even though it's metal centered, other genres are more than welcome to be discussed.) Cheers! http://www.last.fm/group/Unholy+Cult+of+the+Appraised+and+Damned

I still stand by my opinion that most djent bands are just bands that would have been metalcore or deathcore but couldn't handle the criticism from "real" metal fans so they try to appease them by masking themselves as artsy djent bullshit. Because they're srs musicians now. Fuck that. Grow a pair and play what you want.

chug chug chug -core. Just kidding, I just discovered this, I like Meshuggah, what's a good starting point for the genre? Already enjoying Vildhjarta, but I'd like something a little bit more experimental. I don't like heavy metal.

lol the sad part is i think many has listened to Randy about the 'genres'. Complaining about how many subgenres is just silly. There's a whole blog dedicated to metal and it's subgenres; http://kingcrimsonprog.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/list-of-albums-that-you-need-to-have-heard-to-have-a-full-and-comprehensive-understanding-of-metal-music/#Classic Rock

wow wow wow guys ! what the point denying the existence of a sub-genre ? The term is very usefull, if a friend say "you should listen to that stuff, it's a djent band" I immediatly get it. What should he say ? it's a band that play metal, with odd time signatures, hardcore voice, stranges powerchords etc ? it's long and since many bands play like that, it is a genre...

  • okmarianna

as randy of lamb of god said: "ITS JUST HEAVY METAL" deal with it. we have many sub genres within metal, do not need more. this shit only helps if you want to find a band exactly alike. otherwise, it makes no sense.

    januari 2014
  • okmarianna

but back to the djent... the bad of the "movement" is that: guys recycling everyfuckin'thing and do not invent nothing at all. I like the bands Death, Necrophagist, Atheist style .... this whole fucking thing they call "technical death metal" and all these genres that make up all day, they are all based on these bands, dont forget that. what all these bands have in common? "frills" roughly talking. guitars muffled, distorted, virtuous solo... they are also influenced by the progressive and virtuous guys rock like steve vai, Malmsteen, satriani.. If you show a steve vai's solo and a song of Fallujah for a person who does not like things virtuous, for they will be the same shit. this is where I want to get! for us who like this, obviously not the same thing, we could distinguish, but no need to be calling each band a thing

    januari 2014
  • okmarianna

I think there are many terms fort he same thing, you know... I feel like it was necessary to name all. and simply not. once for all! is the same as saying that the "grunge" is a musical genre, is not a fucking genre, is a fucking "movement". technical death metal, death core, brural fucking death metal, technical brutal death metal, math metal, djent, jazz fusion, progressive metal, technical progressive death metal, avantgarde metal. cmon, what the fuck is that? those times I saw a festival's line up that try to define everyfuckin' band, but not just say: "ah, this is a doom metal or a black metal" they do somenthig like: " post hardcore metal" "viking death metal" "chaotic hardcore" "dunk metal" DAMN, why hell you guys need to do that?

    januari 2014
  • Epsilon_X2008

I feel like calling Meshuggah djent is a bit wrong. Sure, they may have inspired the movement but still..

but now a question for some djent geeks, please. I need a band i heard like 5 years ago on youtube. it was a small video. more like a video of them playing in a room for practice. typical "djent" guitar with over 9000 strings. the band name was something like "xxyyzz" or rather unusual. anyone has an idea what it could be? You can respond here, but please let me know at my profile/send me a message. thank you, i'd appreciate it :)

    januari 2014
  • wlaXrbl

still meshuggah doesnt claim to be djent ... they are prog death metal. all they did was experimenting and shit. the first demos/albums are funny somehow .. they are like a mixture of metallica and 'shuggah. even the man did sound a bit like hetfield, at least more than now. but chill your tits, you dont have to love the godfathers only because you like a scene mainly influenced by them. for some they are to heavy and they look for more alternation, also through singing. thats ok. ive been always a fan of metal, but i can still say i dont "like" iron maiden. so who cares, dont be scared of subgenres, one does not have to like everything about the metal scene, same goes for djent (that is also a part of metal, even though some douchebags dont like to think so)
