avant-garde is a blanket term, r.i.o. falls under that blanket term thus is avant-garde thus cannot be greater than avant-garde. r.i.o. is a music movement not a genre, however the term r.i.o. can be loosely applied to bands that represent the sound of the bands which were a part of the r.i.o. movement.

R.I.O> Avant-garde. Actually rio is a part of avant-garde and it's not even a music genre. R.I.O> Avant-garde. Actually rio is a part of avant-garde and it's not even a music genre. R.I.O> Avant-garde. Actually rio is a part of avant-garde and it's not even a music genre.

Krautrock isn't a genre either. Back on the day, it was a commercial term coined by the british specialized press. Some of the so-called Krautrock bands share some similarities (like the use of the motorik beat), but others don't. Also; Zeuhl > Krautrock.

I agree with SirAlecHendrix with the difference between avant-garde and experimental music, because it comes in a more improvised way, but the ambiguity with avant-garde still bothers me, because it comes as "this music is different to what I'm used to" therefore, it's avant-garde.

Avant-garde has been applied to music for a long time now, but the problem with the concept, the vanguardism involved, is that avant-garde is only temporal, it describes a change in musical currents, but as it becomes a style, it has to remain unique in time. When someone else emulates that style then it loses that avant-garde status. Although, emulation is not duplication, I mean, you can see Luigi Russolo for example with his art of noises, a futurist that was avant-garde then and now, back then it was avant-garde, now, with all those people doing noise music (not specificaly harsh noise music) it comes more easy listening and not that vanguardist. And it's not about main$tream, I mean, you have The Residents for example, that are pretty popular, and they're tagged as avant-garde. I don't know.

avant-garde simply means being ahead of the time, and there have been musicians/composers in all eras and genres who stretched their common practice but stayed in their tradition. you might be 'alternative' without being mainstream but still stay in a well-known genre or musical scene. on last.fm, people mostly use lazy abbreviations. if 'avant-garde' is not specified, it's completely open relatively to what or in what genre (rock, jazz, classical, or what ?). for me, 'experimental music' is a different thing, it lies outside of genre borders, outside the tradition. john cage put it nicely: "an experimental action is one the outcome of which is not foreseen". in this sense, most 'experimental' tagged music isn't experimental at all. it sounds "experimental" for listeners who aren't used to listen to this kind of music, a very subjective tag.

"um... care to explain why avantgarde shouldn't exist in a place like lastfm? Last I checked it was a widely used and valid tag" -- of course it's completely okay to use whatever to personally tag music. but if 'avantgarde' is widely used, i'm puzzled about that. i used to attend a lot of avant-garde music concerts, and there weren't a lot of people coming to listen ...
