It's most profitable, I think, to see this song in relation to the four that precede it. For one thing, it provides a boundary to the opening suite of songs. As the second longer, droning track, it separates the first and second sets of fragmentary pieces. And there's more significance to its placement than that. Given its placement directly after "Ex-Lion Tamer" and the two tracks' similar lengths, it also seems to be a response to that track. "Ex-Lion Tamer" took the experiments of the first three tracks, downplayed their stranger elements, and turned them into pop rock; "Lowdown" takes the most distinctive elements of those tracks--the glacial pacing of "Reuters," the false endings of "Field Day ...", the driving guitar riffing of "Three Girl Rhumba"--as its starting point, and crafts from them something like the twisted mirror image of pop. Sometimes you experiment not to improve on what everyone else is doing, but to discover something new.
