My Top 4 Albums of 2009
Explanation: I've only listened to four of 2009's new albums. XD
1: Fragmentary Evidence - Augury
This is a ridiculous album. It's definitely death metal, but their sense of melody and riff composition is very much out-of-the-ordinary for the subgenre. The singing switches between growling and clean, with a use of female vocals that actually works: groundbreaking. XD It's a huge mass of shifting time signatures and riffs which somehow manages to make sense. Also, their bassist is awesome.
My pick of tracks: Sovereigns Unknown, Orphans Of Living, Oversee The Rebirth
2: Milorg - Vreid
I do rather love this album. It's catchy and rhythmic black metal, yet isn't untrue. There seem to be some folk influences in there as well, which is nice. The album's basically a concept album about Norway's role in World War II - the lyrics…

History of Progressive Metal
This is perhaps the most confusing of the sub-genres as it encompasses so many different styles...Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a fusion genre; a mixture of progressive rock and heavy metal. Progressive metal blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock. Some progressive metal bands are also influenced by jazz fusion and classical music. Like progressive rock songs, progressive metal songs are usually much longer than standard metal songs, and they are often thematically linked in concept albums. As a result, progressive metal is rarely heard on mainstream radio and video programs.
