for about two years or so, i considered myself a big TMBG fan but only had flood, apollo 18, the spine, the else, and their release "a user's guide to they might be giants". at one point i decided to try to get all of their albums and i was incredibly impressed with all of the stuff that i had been missing. when i got mink car i thought it was cool, just like john henry, factory showroom, long tall weekend, etc. i didn't realize that people were so passionately dismissive of those records until recently, and i still don't get why

With a very few exceptions, I'd take Mink Car over most of TMBG last decade of mostly childrens music. I'm not saying that it's their best, but it certainly isn't their worst (like the "music expert" reviewers want you to believe).

This album gets such a bad rap, but it's not that bad. I think there is some total dreck on here (I'm looking squarely at you, Mr. Xcitement, mostly because I have a personal grudge against Mike Doughty, though), but there are some real gems, too! Linnell's melancholy songs in particular: Hovering Sombrero, Hopeless Bleak Despair, My Man... They're all close to or at least within shouting distance of comparable songs he wrote for other albums. It's not my favorite album in the world, but sometimes it really pulls me to listen.

Not one of their best, but Man, It's So Loud In Here, Cyclops Rock, Older (and Boss of Me in all of it's overplayed glory) are pretty good. It's no Lincoln tho.
