    Johnny Marr's part in it alone is enough to establish it as one of my top 10 favorite Smiths songs ever, EVER. I don't care about the off-beat lyrics. Nothing can detract from the beauty of the SONG.

    BTW, the B-side live version on the I Started Something I Couldn't Finish 12" is amazing. I have been listening to it practically non-stop since finally ripping it to my computer. It's really exceptional. I think the only thing that could've made it better was Craig Gannon being present to fill in the underlying melody that comes in at the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLGw6by4mfY

    Weird. That's a great book! I actually own and have read it, but somehow that rather massive detail completely escapes my memory.... it's been a while since last reading it though, TBH (I try to avoid wearing it out after seeing the ridiculous prices or it online, because I doubt I could find another cheap copy of it very easily). Thanks for clarifying this! I feel dumb. ;_;

    Just to jump in, the fade intro was actually deliberate. Stephen Street says so in Songs That Saved Your Life by Simon Goddard (which is an essential read by the way), as the Wikipedia page cites: "The recording was given a distinctive intro by engineer Stephen Street, who increased the reverb on the drums, faded the track in then out again, and took the reverb back off when reintroducing the song: "A bit like opening a door, closing it, then opening it again and walking in"".

    @OneSalient: It wasn't actually deliberate from what I've read. It was an oversight on the part of the label, I think. The band just chose not to bother to fix it, supposedly "for teh lulz". Early Aussie pressings have the recording with no fade-in, but I have heard it was just an editing job done on the faded-out master, so it probably sounds a bit jarring and unnatural... You could always try bumping up the volume in a curve that fits the shape of the fade with a wave-editor or something. If you can't get a perfectly smooth volume boost, you could still get pretty close.

    I don't like the intro. I know it was deliberate, but it sounds as though the mixer / producer made a mistake.

    This song, along with William It Was Really Nothing, never fails to force me into a silly grin. Beautiful.

    If I was a doctor and one of my patients asked me if they should lose weight, I would say to them, "some girls are bigger than others" and just leave.
