Oh, no!
8 nov 2008, 03:10 av dturgentbyrne
It's a mindless "YR TOP " survey to keep me amused for a few minutes!
1. How did you get into 30? (The Onion)
I find the weekly publication somewhat amusing, so I began listening to the podcast.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (John Vanderslice)
Time Travel Is Lonely
3. What's your favorite lyric by 7? (Ok City Ok)
Either "She gets mad and makes that Kabuki face," or "Navigating by parallel lines that intersect in incoherent lives." It depends on my mood.
4. What is your favorite album by 9? (Modest Mouse)
The Lonesome Crowded West.
5. How many albums do you own by number 13? (Spacehog)
The three officially released ones, plus one promo of their second album (it's different than the officially released one), and another promo EP, plus various singles.
6. What is your favorite song by 28? (Ghostland Observatory)
Silver City
7. Is there a song by 12 that makes you sad? (Toadies)
Not really. Maybe Away, kinda.
8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Gorillaz)

Destroy Bourgeois Cabaret
29 nov 2007, 21:30 av larrybob
Cabaret is a form that has been taken over by those it once proposed to bury.
Cabaret used to be dangerous. Marya Delvard performing in 1901 at the Elf Scharfrichter--a cabaret in Munich with a name that translates as "Eleven Executioners." http://www.nodanw.com/shows_c/cabaret_essay.htm Her tall, thin, form in a tight black dress--imagine Diamanda Galas, but a hundred years ago. Someone whom I'm sure the respectable citizens thought was a succubus. She sang Wedekind's
Ilse, a song about a promiscuous teenage girl. The cabaret was associated with the radical magazine Simplicissimus.
Now we're left with people performing limp versions of standards interspersed with the dryest of banter. The form has been neutered, made respectable and boring. There is no sense of danger. No sense of excitement. And no politics. Tragic divas are classic--but it's not tragic to be out of date, just mediocre.
There are a few who still could save the form. … -
