So here we are again! I can't be bothered with a long introduction, but I will say this - I managed to go to two concerts this year, Arctic Monkeys in January and Metric in July, and I'm finally going to see my long-time loves Birds of Tokyo next February ;)

A lot of the entries on the following lists have been in my "Top 20..." for years now so I'm going to bold the ones I find the most noteworthy! For artists, this means I'm bolding the ones that are new, or rose a lot of ranks since this time last year; for tracks I'm bolding the ones that are somehow noteworthy (for instance, if I haven't listened to a lot of that artist... hopefully you'll get my logic). I'm not bolding any albums because it's really just a subset of the artists list tbh. Anyway. Onwards!

Fri 13 Jul – Optimus Alive 2012
Фестиваль Optimus Alive уже в шестой раз проводился в пригороде Лиссабона - Альжеше. С самого начала он задал высокую планку - в числе прошлых хэдлайнеров числятся Bob Dylan, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, Neil Young, Metallica, Placebo, Linkin Park, Deftones, Faith No More, Slipknot, The Prodigy, Coldplay и Foo Fighters. Внушающий список, не правда ли? В этом году пришёл черёд и, по мнению некоторых, главной группы планеты Земля - Radiohead :) Билеты на последний день, когда они выступали, а также трёхдневные билеты были распроданы за пару месяцев.
Удивляет, что при португальском кризисе там всё ещё проводятся такие фестивали. Ведь за полтора месяца до Alive в том же Лиссабоне проводился не менее масштабный фестиваль Rock in Rio с той же Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, The Smashing Pumpkins и The Offspring. Не говоря уже о португальском варианте знаменитого Primavera Sound, который появился в этом году. Но не будем завидовать :)

And whisked me away, enthused...Yet another delivery ^_^ Ya-a-ay! Now it's somehow old CD - The Age of the Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets (released in 2008). Always wanted to have it, but for some reasons got it only now. It's a pretty strange story BTW. I can't say that I like The Rascals much and same story with Arctic Monkeys (I like some songs, but nothing more), but when takai-kun showed me the live acoustic of My Mistakes Were Made for You (see below) by Alex and Miles, I was like WHOA O_O It was a love at first sight. Planned to buy the CD since then (can't stand digital copies), but it was always out of stock in my local stores. So, got it only now. It was quite by accident actually, but I'm glad that now I have it on my shelf ^_^ Album is still awesome after all these years. …

Last Saturday, I discussed the issues with the current similar artist formula...especially Metallica being top 10 in similarity with The Offspring (like what?).

Well, since then, I put my programming skills to work and well, I built a little program to test to see it would work with other artists. Results were noticed on several bands/artists as their similar artists over went a make over. However, it did lead to new problems as I tried testing it out super-mainstream acts including our favorite band...Radiohead.


Rage Against the Machine showed up as a similar artist.


...well, apparently. Radiohead's top 250 similar artists currently are all over the place in random genres. A bigger batch of similar artists would be needed to get the best results, but the question is...is my new formula better. I'm going to show you some examples of artists top 25 similar artists...before, and after. You guys make the decision.

So, firstly let's have a brief story probably uninteresting to everyone but me, about my music listening habits this year! (Well, last year now, it being January 1 and all...)

I began the year listening to lots and lots and lots of music every day, because it was summer and what else is there to do? At the turn of the year, I was pretty obsessed with Editors, The Little Flames and, as I recall, British India (especially their album Guillotine, which I used as my alarm for at least a couple of months). Within a few weeks I also came across, and fell in love with, The Cinematics, White Lies and The Bravery.

Then in February a thunderstorm hit my house and I lost the ability to play music in my bedroom, severely limiting my ability to listen to music for 12 hours every day. It was pretty sad, and even when power was finally restored to the front half of my house (after like a month or two) I was solidly out of the habit of listening to 12 hours of music every day. …
