Huge and bombastic and brilliant. Sure, the production and musical chops on display aren't commensurate to the vaulting ambition--but few, if any, have the ability to flawlessly pull off what they're aiming for. (Forgive their ambition; they know not what they do.) It starts off as a cockeyed piano shuffle: rhythm section and piano backing TV Smith's jaundiced take on contemporary alienation, punctuated by occasional group singalongs ("when you read the papers"). By the second verse, Smith is whispering, letting us know dark secrets concerning how things work in this world and the next. And then, out of the blue, the song explodes into stunning cacophony, with lyrics cataloging the horrors of the world and then devolving into tortured cries and yelps. And that explosion is sustained until the fadeout in the final minute. A song to get lost in. Track down the album version with its extended coda; honestly, the single version misses at least half the point.
